Couple recalls Kronic nightmare

A Mount Maunganui couple is warning others not to try synthetic cannabis after their ‘terrifying' experience with the product.

Shane Foreman and Anne Wheeler say the only advice offered on the Kronic packaging was ‘use responsibly'.

Anne Wheeler and Shane Foreman experimented with the synthetic cannabis brand Kronic.

Within five minutes of inhaling a Kronic cigarette, Anne says her ‘terrifying' three hour nightmare began.

They randomly decided to purchase the legal product while at their local dairy, choosing to experiment with it at a nearby beach.

'Within minutes I couldn't move or walk,” says Anne.

'I didn't know who I was, who my partner was, where we were – I couldn't remember anything about my life or where we lived.

'I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I thought my time had come to die.”

Her partner also suffered bad side effects, enduring a long ‘zombie' like state.

The frightening experience lasted over three hours, during which the couple stayed at the beach in a disorientated and confused state.

'The most terrifying thing was that I thought I was going to stay in that state forever,” says Anne.

The 40 year old has smoked real cannabis twice before in her youth, but says the experience with the fake version was much worse.

'I'm actually anti-drugs, but we were in the dairy and we saw a poster advertising it and my partner said ‘should we try it'.

'I said no, but he bought it anyway.

'I'm 40. I thought I was responsible and would use it sensibly, but look what happened to me,” says Anne.

A recent investigation by a national news agency revealed Kronic, an R-18, item, was being sold to underage teenagers ‘as easy as chewing gum'.

Anne has warned her young nieces and nephews and urges other youths not to use the product.

'They just want to sell it – the guy at the dairy we bought it from didn't seem worried at all. He told us they sold heaps of it.”

If those over 18 do decide to use it, Anne warns people not to use it alone, inhale small amounts and wait, don't use it with alcohol and do it in a safe environment.

She admits taking 10 puffs of the Kronic cigarette in less than five minutes, but did not think that was a large amount.

'When I've tried real cannabis in the past I just got a bit giggly. So because this stuff is legal I thought it would pretty harmless.

'But it was at least 20 to 30 times worse.”

Representatives from Lightyears Ahead Limited, the company that owns and manages the Kronic product, were approached for comment but did not return phone calls.

This must be a joke, I've tried Kronic many times, and it just feels relaxing..no weird side affects or anything, no addictive qualities at all. Maybe someone slipped them some LSD lol as this sounds like more of an acid trip. From someone who has tried Kronic many times, this article sounds like they should stick with their straight edge lifestyle. Probably they think a strong coffee make them "trip out" lol

Worthy Critics?

By Anne's own admission, she tried pot 'a couple of times' in her youth and from this past experience she's able to make a 'qualified' comparison to the Kronic she smoked that she found it '20 to 30 times worse'. If she were to sit around and take '10 puffs' of pot she would I'm sure experience a similar effect. This is similar to a non drinker sitting down and drinking a good amount of alcohol & then whinging about throwing up and the subsequent hangover. Brings to mind an expression I read years ago - Reality is made for people who can't handle drugs!

anti or pro drugs?

Someone who is anti-drugs, busy experimenting with "legal" drugs. I smell a rat....

I do wonder what is in or on kronic to give the high. we know the long term effects of weed and they not so good, what if kronic is worse????

Stupid couple

Well, just shows that stupidity is NOT caused by drugs.

Responsible?

SpeakUp - that is CLASSIC I don't need to take drugs to feel sick - People like this make me feel VERY ill!If you dont want to get drunk - I suggest you dont drink alchohol - If you dont want to lose control of your mind I suggest you don't take Mind Altering substances - for gods sake people. The dope of today (Im talking about the drug - not the people) is 100 times more potent than 20 years ago, mostly the result of the Law of prohibition (ie illegal substances get smaller and more potent to conceal them, and aid in their concealement from the law and distribution). The manufacturers of this product GAVE ME some product to try because I stood up for them in a similar episode recently. I still have not smoked it because I do not like mind altering substances. Abstinence is the best way of not getting stoned people - please refrain from voluntarilly doing STUPID THINGS, and then blaming others for your STUPIDITY.

who missed the point?

Posted on 05-06-2011 21:04 | By nokronic

that this is a legally sold product in local dairys, never mind the effects...

why!

Posted on 05-06-2011 22:53 | By flowerkiwi

What you do in your youth can not compared to a 40yr old but my question is why go to the beach? Not knowing how it would affect you, you would think you would go home and be in a safe place..3 hrs is a long time anything could have happen then they would be moan about that too. And anti drugs how do you work that out whether they legal or not they are still drugs!!

Why

Posted on 06-06-2011 08:50 | By Maryknz

Why do they need it at all?

Save me from myself

Posted on 06-06-2011 09:41 | By The Tomahawk Kid

@maryknz: Why they need it at all is nobodys business but their own. People should be allowed to do anything they want with their own body, so long as they are prepared for the consequences of their actions, and use no force or create danger to others. The consequences of government saving people from acts of stupidity are to fill the country with fools. This is the chickens coming home to roost now. People are so used to Government saving us from ourselves, that we no longer are able to be responsible for our OWN ACTIONS, and feel like we have to blame SOMEBODY ELSE

The GOOD side of this story is . . .

Posted on 06-06-2011 09:48 | By The Tomahawk Kid

To these peoples credit, at least they havent demanded that it be BANNED! (the usual reaction to somebody who doesnt like or agree with something) It appears they have just warned people about their bad experience, and to expect the same - which is a GOOD THING. Education is the key people - Prohibition (as proved by history, and the ineffectual war on drugs) will fix NOTHING, and only make things WORSE

Because Kronic is sold as a legal product at local dairy's and wholesalers, being liberal and openminded we decided very skeptically to try Kronic. Indeed as Tomahawk kid states we are simply warning people of our own effects of using the product and pointing out that it is readily available at the above places and youngsters as young as 15 are able to obtain it, as claimed in the Herald on Friday. Surely if a product like this is sold 'legally' it shouldn't produce the effects that we experienced. Everybody has a different makeup and what happened to us doesn't mean it will have the same effect on everybody. There is certainly no rat here but I will always remember the pungent smell that day. I am surprised by the amount of critical comments posted when what is better than putting it out there the dangers to 'some', especially teenagers, who are thinking of trying this or similar products. I enjoy a double latte or two and will most definitely stick to that for a pleasurable consumable from now on don't you worry. You have been warned...

Really?

Posted on 06-06-2011 14:17 | By sojourner

It beggars belief. How is taking drugs responsible? Recent research in The Netherlands (a drug-friendly country) has shown that Cannabis destroys braincells, permanently. Nice of them to warn folks, surely, but responsible drug taking? The lies we tell ourselves to give ourselves permission to do what we already know is harmful. I call that stupid.

remember ?

Posted on 06-06-2011 14:33 | By kim wheeler

Have people forgotten that the word drug and "legal drug" include prescription "drugs" prescribed by doctos and surgeons. So how can "really" ask whether taking drugs is responsible or not? I mean hello? it would be completely irresponsible for someone NOT to take a prescibed DRUG!!! Anyway Kronic should not be allowed to be sold in local diaries anyway i mean after watching the closeup programme on it and the effects on the young teenagers who were able to puchase and use it why is it still allowed to be sold legally. This is where the rat is!!!!

Like you, I am fiercely against a "Nanny state" and I agree that free people should be able to do what they want as long as it harms nobody. I think it is commendable that the couple concerned have reported their experience as a warning, but I still ask myself why anyone who has reached maturity would want to buy a product just because it was advertised in the local dairy. Still, that is beside the point and it is not for me to judge. As a child of the sixties, I cannot claim NEVER to have indulged, but I CAN claim not to have for over 40 years. (I don't miss it; get just as high watching the sunset from Mauao or standing near the blowhole when a storm is running, or watching ANY of our sports teams beat Australia :-)) As long as we permit alcohol and tobacco to be sold I don't think we can claim the moral high ground regarding legalized drugs, but I still feel we'd be better off without them. Banning stuff is just an admission that we are not responsible enough to exercise good judgement, so the next best thing has to be publicized warnings from people who had bad experiences. I guess the real question is why we feel the need to get chemically induced "high"s, whether it be drugs or alcohol (which I do enjoy, BTW). Are our lives so dismal we need to seek refuge in drugs? Or is it just social "ice-breaking"? Certainly some people who smoke pot, do it for the company and rarely alone. If I had to choose a side, I would be anti-drugs, but I think personal responsibility trumps that. This is why we need much stricter education and policing of kids and drugs. Adults exercising a choice is one thing, kids being cynically exploited for the financial gain of some gang or low-life is quite another. I'm not persuaded that offering "legal drugs" is sending the right message to kids. Maybe they should only be available from liquor outlets and not from local dairies?

interesting

Anyway Shane and Anne thanks for sharing your experience and waring others especialy the vulnerable teenagers of what happened to you both so that they can make a more informed choice knowing of the dangers of the legally sold kronic

amazing

I also am surprised by the many numerous negative comments regarding this article and the numerous negative comments to a obvously healthy bright and normal couple! I am amazed that people just dont seem to "get it"!. Our country has enough trouble trying to contol and sort the issues of our teenagers with drugs and alchol and now we have a "legal " drug copier called knonic and it is sold legally and at local famuily dairies!!! we all no teenagers will try anything for a dare or something new or a new high so god on Anne and Shane for being adults and experiencieng something they would hope no young person could purchase so readily and easily fro a local family diary . I mean what is the world coming to ?!! We are meant to protect and advise and lead our young people in the correct direction for a good safe and healthy life!! good on you Shane and Anneyou are obvously well educated caring and open minded people willing to help gude our younger generation in the right way!! Well done !! goo don you!!!

by the way

Posted on 06-06-2011 19:05 | By openminded

has it ever occured to anyone that the couple involved were simply purchasing a product from a local family diary that any young person also could do and that one wouldm normally agree that what you can buy from a diary should be harmless and ok like bread milk and lollies!!! Like party pills ( most of which are now illegal!!) kronic obvously should be sold in liquor or adult shops only or do we notgive a hoot about our young people!!!!). I give them credit for buying a product that is obvouly very dangerous for our young easily influence people and being able to warn their neices nephews and otheer teenagers about their expeience. We need more wonderful caring people like you two not like some self caring peole who0 only think of Krnoic from their own adult perspective!!! And why will the makers and producers of Krnoic not respond or answer questions? seems very dodgy if you ask me!

silly couple

Posted on 08-06-2011 12:55 | By gubbys

i agre Anon i have smoked kronic also and it was just relaxing. it does sound like something else they had classic! but i dont understand why they had it in the first place if they are anti drugs and kronic definatly states it is a legal high with HIGH being something everyone knows as shown on the news about this product. i definatly agree that this should be only sold in liquor stores and for 18+ only as it is smokable and it is illegal to smoke cigis under 18+ so find it amazing the goverment didnt put an age onit for the smoking part at least!!

Best Laugh Ever

most critics to this article are regular kronic users or they haven't even tried it...

Deja vu

Posted on 08-07-2011 05:13 | By Abdul

To all of you who doubt this is a legitimate warning I just say be careful, very careful. There is an increasing number of reports of "bad trips" on this stuff. If you would have asked me about this yesterday I would have also said they are just soft and had too much too quick, but after my recent experience I've changed camps. Just so you know my pedigree I have used drugs in the past such as real weed and also many years ago, LSD. I've had both good and very bad experiences with LSD. Like the people in this article I'm not so young anymore and am essentially not a user at all anymore, so with Kronic I took it real slow knowing I wouldn't need much. To that end, I had three good experiences with it before my 4th which was a nightmare. On this 4th time I barely had 1/2 cone (3 tokes) of what I thought was a small amount (certain less than I had on the 3rd time, but a different blend) and within 10 minutes my heart felt like it was trying to escape from my chest, I felt like I couldn't breathe (although I was able to assure myself that I could actually breathe, making me wonder how much of this response is in the mind), I got an incredibly dry mouth (worse than anything you'd normally expect), an incredible thirst and I got all over body flushes (a sense of being engulfed by something) and tingling all over like what I'd expect maybe before passing out. I also at one point felt like I was going to be sick, but managed to keep it at bay. Several times (during a bit of a rollercoaster up and down ride) I thought I was about to die, but having had bad LSD experiences in the distant past, used that experience to talk (and walk) myself through it. I have no doubt that people without"bad trip" experience would be calling an ambulance given the experience I had; I was so darned close to doing that myself in fact. After about 3 hours I was finally back into some kind of control.. I don't know whether this was a bad reaction to Kronic or potentially a "hot spot" (new term I have picked up from reading forums) or what, but I do know that these reports are real (search a few forums and you'll find many of them) so people need to be really careful with this stuff.

The most hilarious thing I've ever seen

Posted on 14-08-2011 02:23 | By bubu

Me and my best friend just had 4 kronic joints, I definitely don't feel anything apart from a headache and lazy buzz. Hahaha, this is ridiculous. They're either lying, or they got slipped some other stuff.
