Skate park scoops supreme award

It started as a vision for a bunch of kids from the Omokoroa Point School. And then after two years of planning and fundraising and five months of construction it blossomed into a $242,000 skate park.

To cap it all off, the Omokoroa Community Skate Group, the people behind the skate park project, were declared the Supreme Winner of the 2016 Trustpower Western Bay of Plenty District Community Awards last night.

The Omokoroa skate park.

The project started with $50,000 funding from the Western Bay of Plenty District Council in 2014.

A skate park designer was engaged and, in consultation with the schoolkids, the skate park concept became a three dimensional design.

It also involved a lot of creative fundraising from bingo nights, discos, raffles, sponsorship and a fun run.

The first two stages of the skate park are completed and the Skate Group is now working on the final stage of planting, seating and signage.

The Supreme Winner citation says 'the project is a powerful example of what a small community can achieve if everyone has a shared vision”.

And further acclaim in the Trustpower Community Awards for the seaside suburb. The Omokoroa Boat Club was runner up in the Sport and Leisure. It's a group which promotes the safe use of sailing dinghies and rescue craft.

And the suburb's Public Art Group won the Arts and Culture award for the design and installation of the lizard that sits at the entrance to Omokoroa.

A great little park for the kids that no one could object to, but almost a quarter of a million dollars? Somebodies been creaming it.
