Three days, five crashes, nine deaths

With nine people killed in car accidents across the country recently, national road policing manager Superintendent Steve Greally is pleading with motorists to take care on the roads.

Tragically, several families are now left grieving following five separate fatal crashes in the Bay of Plenty, Tasman, Counties Manakau and Central Districts since Monday night, says Stephen.

'While the causes of these crashes are still the subject of police investigation, we know from past experience crashes like this are usually preventable, and to see yet more families left devastated in this way is incredibly sad.

'As far as police is concerned, any death or injury is one too many, and everyone needs to be doing their part to reduce deaths and injuries on our roads.”

Stephen says with winter well and truly upon us, and more bad weather on the way, drivers must be extremely careful and make allowances for the conditions. This includes slowing down, increasing following distances and potentially avoiding any non-essential travel.

Icy conditions are also expected in the Central Plateau of the North Island, which will make driving conditions treacherous, he says.

'In these hazardous driving conditions there is a much greater risk of losing control and having a crash if you are travelling too fast for the conditions. The last thing Police wants is having to tell yet more families that loved ones aren't coming home.

'Remember, the speed limit is not a target, it's the maximum legal speed that you can travel at on a road in ideal conditions - and they often don't exist on our roads in winter.”

When driving in winter conditions, police also recommend motorists allow extra time for their journey and to be aware of other road users who may not be easily seen, like cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Safe winter driving also includes keeping windscreens clean and fully defrosted, taking care in shady areas where there may be black ice on the road, using headlights in fog and increasing following distances.

'We want everyone to be safe on our roads this winter, so please take care,” says Stephen.

Most of these accidents are from poor driving. Slow down and focus on what you see through your windscreen. I still believe defensive driving courses should be compulsory for new drivers. They are very insightful.

Or they should have to ride shotgun in a multi combination heavy vehicle so they can see the stupid driving actions by their peers around heavy vehicles.

I'd like to see everyone have to go through the restricted drivers licence testing every five or ten years, and to go back to a restricted licence if they can't pass. so many don't seem to know, or remember, or care, about road rules and safe driving - and knowing the limitations of your vehicle. my heart goes out to the families of all the victims of road crashes

All driver error not the road. Poeple in NZ can't drive just look at today rain and still no lights on or on the phone while driving

Rocket science

while driver error is definitely a significant factor in many accidents, this particular stretch between kati and Bethlehem needs immediate attention and like kaons I agree it ain't rocket science. The most common cause of accident fatalities in n.z is head on. Rather than wasting money on stupid fix ups..incompetent decision making by over paid idiots...which is a total burden(road works) to commuters build another road with connecting junctures kati and Bethlehem when it's complete make one north bound and one south bound.....and in the mean time no road works on what already is a very busy road with commuters and truckies ....

So many people when merging traffic speed up to make sure they get in front of bus and they well behind the bus. Or someone flashes lights to let bus into traffic while car behind them pulls out to pass both car and bus. abusing other driver at sametime while passing. Like in Bayfair across front of main entrance has one way arrow but so many people drive wrong way and get abusive because your coming toward them the right way.
