Highway open after horror crash

State Highway 2 is open after truck and car crash which left five people dead.

The crash at the intersection of Dawson's Road happened about 8.15pm when a car pulled out of the road.

Police say the vehicle, which was heading north on SH2, was struck by a southbound truck and trailer unit.

"All five occupants of the car were killed. The truck driver was uninjured," say police in a media statement.

The highway was closed for several hours and was reopened just after 12.30am.

"Police extend sympathies to the families of all those involved in this tragic incident."

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash and working to notify the family of those who were killed.

Sunlive is not naming the dead until poilce have completed the process of formally notifying the next of kin, many of whom are in Tonga.

The occupants of the vehicle were seasonal workers who were leaving the Aongatete Kiwifruit Packhouse after the 8 o'clock shift, reports Stuff.co.nz.

Allan Dawson, managing director at Aongatete told RNZ News he'd had concerns about the safety of the crash site intersection for some time.

"I just think it was human error, there's a dip to the right and vehicles appear out of the dip quite quickly.

"We'd like a turning lane to the right into a side road, but that wouldn't have helped in this case."

Allan says he'd made a case for a light at the intersection with roading authorities, which he thought they were receptive to.

The Aongatete Packhouse would be closed for the day as staff come to terms with the tragedy.

Truck versus car

Unfortunatly this happens everyday in and around Tauranga. Cars pulling out in front of heavy vehicles. This one has ended in a tragic way. The truck is always going to win. Please give heavy vehicles lots of space. Dont cut in front when pulling out of roads or try and beat the truck because this is what can happen. It takes a lot to stop 50 ton. My sympathies go out to the truck driver and victims in this tragic accident. Please be patient around heavy vehicles.

Speed

extended to families and co workers, very sad. Let's not speculate...

Reduce max. speed

Reduce the maximum speed on this road to 80 or 90km/h, too many side roads and local traffic entering this road for 100km/h

Too Many Accidents

Tauranga just SLOW DOWN and take more care as you can see beautiful people die every single day just like you and me. We must stop the carnage. To the police and rescue people, I hope youre all ok as this would have been horrific to attend. Love to the families of deceased and also the truck driver.

NOT speed

How slow does the logging truck have to be going so that a driver can make a mistake like this and survive ?

It does not matter what speed he logger was travelling at. The car failed to give way. That is what caused he accident. For the record the driver of this logger was not a bloke. Im sure she is going thru hell right now....

UPGRADE STATE HIGHWAY

We hear about the "halo effect" the property-market is having on housing but very little of the roads that are now heaving with motorists. Can we PLS fast-track the widening of this extremely busy State Highway so that should an accident occur, there is at least a chance of surviving. And some roundabouts coming out of the feeder roads onto the State Highway? Deepest sympathy to all affected.
