There'll be a flurry of activity along The Strand waterfront today with Tauranga City Council carrying out water tests as part of the Access to Water project.
The testing is to determine if there are any contaminated materials that will need to be properly managed when construction of the new tidal stairs, pier and pontoon begins in September.

Group Communication Advisor Lucy Brake says in total there will be seven testing sites and two groundwater sampling sites located between the Hairy Maclary statues and the playground.
The groundwater testing will be completed by direct push drilling and the hole will be 100mm across and fully remediated afterwards,” says Lucy.
'There will be 1.8m high by 2.7m long steel mesh fences at each test location, with signs and cones directing pedestrians around the area will be provided.”
The work will be relatively low impact and is expected to take one day to complete.

What about testing current flow

as well as testing water quality what about testing current flow for a series of 24 hour periods to see how safe that is.
Mid winter testing?

That will get the best results, little likely to show up in anything, mid summer would far more revealing.

The current is strong, just need sit there anytime but the change of tides and all is obvious. I can see a few unsuspecting soles being cast adrift and heading to the Sebel if they are lucky, more like some propeller at eh wharf, Orca in the Harbour or worst case "all out at sea" ...

I can see an added cost to TCC having someone clean these steps as the gunk builds up on them.
