Baywide clash to clear log-jam

With just two rounds remaining in the men's Baywide club rugby it's become a log-jam at the top of the points table.

Te Puke Sports will return home today to face an inform Rotoiti side. Te Puke Sports and Rangataua are on even points on the table, which will see both sides this weekend tussle for second position.

Te Puke coach Craig Jeffries says every game is important.

'Every game is must win for all teams so nobody is lacking motivation. Rotoiti are coming off a pretty dominant display against Greerton Marist last week.”

Craig says his side is fighting for their season.

'So we will be keen to continue from where we left off last Saturday. Again we face changes due to injury but will throw everything at Rotoiti on our home turf. With only two games left in the second round it should be a real battle and a great one for the spectators to witness.” Rotoiti and Steamers player Joe Royal says his side is under no illusion how tough Te Puke will be.

'Te Puke have been a pretty tough side all competition. The boys will have to take their confidence from the last two games where they have fought for the win. It will be a big game, and the boys are excited about.

'We are not looking too far ahead, if we get over the Te Puke hurdle and see how the other results go then hopefully things will go our way. Currently the teams focus is just a one game at a time mentality.”

The game is being played at Murray Salt Stadium, kick off at 2.45pm.

Meanwhile, in the premier two clash it is an Eastern Bay of Plenty derby between Poroporo and Opotiki. Poroporo coach Ed Maui is looking forward to playing at home.

'We have spent the best part of this round on the road, so the boys are looking forwards to playing back home this weekend.

'This weekend we will need to hold onto the pill. Last week we defended too long at times and the Paroa side broke us. Hopefully this week we will hold onto the pill and use our opportunities,” Ed says.

'It is a must win game for us. If we lose, it will be tough for us to make the top four. However we know this weekend will be a big ask facing another premier side. But the boys will be pulling out everything for the game.”

Opotiki coach Dean Elimger it is an important match for his side as well.

'It is a must win for us, there is a point between us. If we don't beat them we will drop. The boys will be up for it.” Dean credits his team's performance last weekend against Whakarewarewa.

'The boys had a good game against Whaka last weekend, so they will get some confidence from that. It was 22 all with 10 minutes to go so it could have gone either way. Whaka have been putting 50 odd points on each team so it is good to be that close to them and helps build a bit of character and confidence with the boys.

'The same as every week we have to get up for it. We can't let them score early, as they will get their heads up when that happens. The key for us will be to start strongly and go from there.”

The game is being played at Poroporo Park, kick off at 2.45pm.
