More heavy rain to come

Slips, surface flooding, lightning and thunder were reported last night as a deluge of heavy rain hit the Bay – and there is still more to come.

A severe weather warning remains in place for the Bay of Plenty as a strong, moist northerly flow covering New Zealand brings further rain to western and northern parts of both islands.

'Heavy rain is expected to continue in the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges until around midday, where a further 100mm is likely on top of what has already fallen,” says the MetService.

According to tepukeweather.co.nz, 9.9mm of rain has fallen in the region so far and the temperature was recorded at 17 degrees at 7.15am.

Bay of Plenty Police are also warning people to avoid driving if possible or to drive carefully for those who do have to travel.

'If you need to be on the roads please take care and add extra time to your travel plans. Be safe out there.

"Please watch your following distances, put your headlights on and keep your speeds down."

In particular the following roads are experiencing significant surface flooding and drivers should avoid them if possible:

  • State Highway 5, near Earthquake Flats, south of Rotorua,
  • State Highway 30, between Rotorua and Whakatane, and
  • State Highway 1, North of Tokoroa.

What's The Big Deal

It never fails to amuse me that rain (including the heavy variety) never fails to make the News during the Winter months. I would've thought by now that people who bring us our news would've figured out that it's Winter and that rain is therefore to be expected. No news here, just a part of life.

I wouldn't disagree with you in general terms. But weather is the one fact of life that affects us all whether we like it ir not. Sharing a few thoughts about 'extremes' is somewhat more palatable than incessant reports about doom and gloom, violence, bad drivers, politics etc etc. Unless of course weather events cause disasters.
