Simon heads states side

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges is heading to the United States of America to learn about the US foreign policy process.

The May 9-20 trip is funded by the International Visitor Leadership Programme of the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

National Party MP Simon Bridges.

During his time on the programme Simon will visit Washington DC as well as Portland and San Francisco.

Simon will meet with government officials and security agencies as well as academics, think-tank representatives and media.

Specific areas for discussion will include how foreign policy is formulated, terrorism and counter terrorism, and the role of both traditional and social media in influencing foreign policy.

'This visit should be of great value and interest for the future,” says Simon, 'and I'm attending at a very interesting time.

'Wikileaks and the death of Osama Bin Laden are just a couple of examples of the kind of matters America's government has been grappling with recently and that I will learn much more about when I am there.”

We're lucky to have Simon as our MP. He's conscientious and works hard.

Is there a reciprocal agreement

The US government paying for the trip at first looks good. But does the NZ government then pay for trips here by US politicians? I'm sure the foreign affairs discussions will be far more interesting than sorting out a fair foreshore and seabed act.

Winston not a role model

I hardly think Winston was the poster boy for economy when it came to overseas jaunts. I think the baubles of office cling to any pilitician.

Give them all an extended holiday

We should send ALL the politicians to the USA (or maybe Afganistan). They cause less trouble for the people who do something productive for a living when they are out of they way. When they come back they should grant themselves a 6 week holiday. By that time it will be Christmas and time to close parliament down for a few months
