A call for free-to-air All Blacks

There are concerns the national game is becoming elitist and out of reach for thousands of fans.

And Tauranga list MP Clayton Mitchell wants the Government to step in to ensure top level rugby, the All Blacks, remain accessible to heartland support.

The NZ First MP believes all New Zealand should be able to see the All Blacks on free-to-view television, especially when playing at home.

'Rugby remains New Zealand's national game but it's become increasingly a game in which major matches can only be watched live by the better-off members of society,” says Clayton Mitchell, the NZ First spokesperson on sport and recreation,

He believes the game is pricing itself out of the reach of many people who love and support the game.

'There will be many people who cannot to afford to buy tickets for tonight's Eden Park test between the All Blacks and Wales," he says. 'Hundreds of thousands of others will miss out on watching the game live on television because they can't afford Sky.

'The All Blacks are our showpiece team and the public should be able to watch them free on television, as they once could.”

Clayton says critics of that idea believe the All Blacks themselves will suffer because they'd miss out on money coming to them via broadcasting rights.

'The government must step in and do as governments in Britain and Australia have done and ensure certain sports have free, live broadcasts.”

What do you think? Is All Blacks rugby pricing itself out of reach for many fans? Post your comments below.

While Clayton is at it perhaps Sky needs a boot into touch, they ruined NZ TV.

Sport

I agree however it should apply to ALL sport, sky has a monopoly on all sports broadcasts and if you cant afford sky then you dont get to see it, the government should address this and give us all the opportunity to watch sport especially those with NZ teams/individuals involved.

Oh Clayton,.....

...you are getting desperate to keep your name out there aren't you!..some things of all sport or whatever activity will always be outside of the reach of some.Like many other sports worldwide, the All Blacks are very marketable, and as such has a price tag. For what looks like only $40.00 you can (or could) have had a ticket to Eden park for the Wales game, not at all a high price to pay I would have thought for an International team compared to Europe where you would easily pay that to get into a lower division football game, let alone the upper levels. It's called professional sport Clayton, someone has to pay to be able to continue to play at such a high level and continue to do so. We CAN watch the game for free..just not live!. Clayton, do you think a more socialist party suit you?

Sports Free-To-Air

All games of sports teams representing New Zealand should be shown on free-to-air - its part of why we support our sports teams, as spectator's and financially.

football, lotto and wine

in world sport, the All Blacks do not rate because rugby is not a global sport. Only a handful of countries take it seriously. Many Kiwis are turning away from rugby to more sporty sports. NZ is no longer the rugby, racing and beer nation it once was....more like football, lotto and wine.

Where to put the TV

I agree with you Clayton, but what's the point when there is no room for the TV in a car the doubles as your home.

Sports Free to Air

I agree with Denny G, all sport should be free to air, unless of course Sky offered a sport only package at a reasonable price.

Not a taxpayer responsibility

I can only wonder what kind of business Clayton operated if he comes up with ideas on how to spend taxpayers hard earned money like this. This is nonsense, unless of course he thinks the movies, ballet, opera and every sport imaginable should be free too. And who pays to make it free? Oh yes the mug taxpayer. And while we're at it the mug taxpayer also pays up for Claytons large salary and MPs expenses.

Not a chance Sky reducing costs in fact they have just put up the monthly cost and of course as Sports is most popular it,s the only package to also increase.@captain sensible we won,t be getting any football as some Arab consortium got the rights for Asia/Pacific and are trying to screw the networks if they want any games.Plus sky keep losing rights and don,t even mention it.As someone mentioned they,ve ruined NZ TV
