Police Attack

If the Police were to take this action more often, maybe those who choose to use weapons in confronting the police would adopt more restraint !!!

attacking police or anybody else for that matter with a machete and a slasher deserves all they get. no sympathy for the man but deep sorrow for the family

More restraint sometimes not an option for the unwell?

More often than not the victim of the shooting is just that, just another victim (as noted in recent days with a Sydney Police shooting of a knife wielding young man) of a mental health system that is failing to protect and enhance those afflicted or the community. It seems that the taser or stun gun is not the first preferred option.

differing stories

the partner of the victim states he was walking away from the police with his arms in the air when shot

1. Conflicting reports of what happened mean we should suspend judgement until there has been full disclosure and the real events are clear. 2. Police need support and proper training if they are to be given lethal weapons.

I understand why you would say that, but, as one of the generation who grew up during the Cold War, I am persuaded that escalating violence doesn't solve anything. There was a policy called MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), which ensured that nobody could actually win but the World could be destroyed at any moment (possibly even by accident...). If we condone increased shooting of people without benefit of due process, but simply because they are "bad boys" or have a criminal record, then you might as well abolish the legal system and have one simple rule: Break the Law, and the penalty is death. If you think that one through, I'm sure you will understand why I advocate balance and restraint, rather than escalation. (Also, history has shown that increasing the severity of punishments does nothing to lower crime statistics, so the whole premise is flawed to start with.)
