Greerton rotunda goes to school

The Greerton band rotunda, a victim of the new Greerton Library construction, is to be re-sited across the road to the grounds of Greerton Village School.

City councillors this week agreed to pay for the relocation costs of $31,500. The rotunda would then be vested with the Ministry of Education, which will pay for future maintenance and operating costs.

The $43,500 rotunda is to be reassembled.

The rotunda was removed nine months ago as part of the Greerton Library construction project. It's been cut up and is currently stored in a council yard at Te Maunga.

It cost $12,000 to pull down and remove, with the money coming from the library project budget. Relocation cost are being paid for from the library budget contingency fund.

Representatives from Greerton Mainstreet, The Greerton Village Association and Greerton Village School spoke to the council in support of the move.

Greerton Village School board of trustees Tony Fish says the playground is already used for many different community events.

Once installed in the school grounds, it will continue to be of service to the community.

Tony's only problem is keeping enough room aside for the rugby field.

Councillor Gail McIntosh says the Greerton School and Mainstreet people should first inspect the rotunda/stage to ensure it's in a suitable state. Council staff say it is.

In total, it's costing the city council $43,500 to remove, store and re-assemble the rotunda. Councillor Bill Grainger says the council is paying for a lack of earlier consultation between council staff Mainstreet and the school.

'I would have preferred it to go from one side directly across the road to the school,” says Bill.

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Sally Benning says they're all keen to see the rotunda remain in use in Greerton Village.

'This is a win-win situation for us all. This fitted in exactly with Greerton Village School who were very keen to house the Rotunda and continue to make it available for Community events, as well utilise it well for school activities.”

Greerton Village School is delighted such a great community amenity is being reinstalled and that it is to be on the school grounds.

'We are a community school and, as the only green space in the centre of Greerton, it is perfect that the Rotunda should be here. We will make the most of it and will ensure that it continues to be highly valued,” says school principal Anne Mackintosh.

Here is another "Council" decision made and no consultation with the Greerton ratepayers.$43,000 of ratepayers funds spent - no consultation, no planning, no accountability. We need to remember this when the next local body elections come around !!!1

A great idea..

Its a lovely idea, but when I read "lack of earlier consultation" between Council staff and the School, it makes my blood boil. Double handling of course will push up the cost.

NO CONSULTATION

Personally I am extremely disappointed with this decision. What makes Greerton Village unique is its atmosphere. Apart from festivals the rotunda was utilised by buskers, dancers etc. Saw a group of girls sitting in a circle one Friday night singing. The rotunda could have been utilised more, if marketed, as available. NO CONSULTATION by Council with locals about this. When they were building the library, they said it would return

No Surprise

Probably, once again, councillors had no say in the decision but it may have been made by TCC employees alone. This seems to be happening all the time these days. TCC employees seem to be a law unto themselves. The staff who make major decisions with no reference to councillors should be given their marching orders immediately. I would like to hear comment from councillors themselves on this one.
