Nearly 1000 people participated across multisport and running events on a glorious sunny day which was ideal for racing.
Both Wilde and Smit dominated their divisions to win the racefor the second year in a row. Tauranga athlete Wilde blitzed the field with nearest rival Stuart Lynch the current adventure racing world champion 10 minutes back in second place.
Smit was even more dominant in the women's field beating second place Sophie Jaggs by 46 minutes.
Both athletes beat their 2015, time by 20 minutes. Race organiser Mark Samson put the fast times down to a slightly shorter course, good track conditions and possibly fitter and faster athletes.
Wilde was stoked with his race which was his first multisport race since winning the two day coast to coast race in February. Since then the 18-year-old rising star has been involved in triathlon events.
The Nugget win adds to a string of wins this summer including the world junior Xterra champion title.
Now in its sixth year, the Festival also includes the Half Nugget Duathlon (10 km coastal run/23 km MTB/2.2km run), and 5, 10 and 21.1kilometre adventure run and walk events.
The Half Nugget Duathlon individual male winner was Nico de Jong in 1.37.33 with the fastest female, Lydia Hale, across the line in 2.00.06 only 6 seconds ahead of second place getter Matilda Lawrence.
In the half marathon, Owen Warburton blitzed the course to take the podium in a time of 2.26.47, just under a minute clear of second-placed Marc Scott.
Dianne Bulled won the women's half marathon in a time 2.47.39, with Nikki Hill in second in a time of 2.51.11.
The community run event has raised funds for a new sports facility for the little town affectionately known as New Zealand's Heart of Gold.
Race organiser, Mark Samson was stoked with the event and its rising popularity.
'Previously the event was run by events company Total Sport, with this the third year that our community organised it. We've had greater community support as a result and participation has sky-rocketed from previous years.”
The event has seen participation grow every year and feedback from participants has been incredibly positive.
Di Brown from Ohope who has participated for the last two years was particularly enthusiastic about the event.
'The event is so well organised, it's achievable and the course is spectacular. I'm sure that's why people love the event and I think the event will continue to grow.”
Samson reflecting on the events popularity further noted that Waihi is an easy place to get to and has much to offer as a holiday destination.
'We have great places to shop, eat and stay, loads of historical and outdoor activities including Waihi beach, and the Hauraki Rail Trail, which starts right in Waihi, has huge appeal for cyclists, runners and walkers of all ages,” Samson says.
