Tauranga's Phil Rudd is in the news again after being named as one of the 100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.
Rolling Stone Magazine have released a list of the world's greatest drummers which includes the likes of Bill Ward from Black Sabbath, Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, Phil Collins and John Bonham from Led Zeppelin.

Former AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd made the list at number 86.
Rolling Stone says Rudd's economic style and monster groove helped paved the way for the iconic band's stardom.
'One of the most consistent minimalists in hard-rock drumming, Rudd influenced the wave of international players from Ramstein's Christoph Schienider to Kiss' Eric Singer,” says Rolling Stone.
Singer says Rudd's feel is 'the heart and soul of the band”.
Rudd started out in AC/DC in 1975, replacing Peter Clark.
He played on seven studio albums before the death of vocalist Bon Scott.
Rudd was fired from the band in 1983 following substance abuse and a physical altercation with guitarist Malcolm Young.
He returned to the band in 1993 and played on another four albums.
In 2015, Rudd was sentenced to eight months home detention.

Why is this guy even on the list at all? He plays the same simple monotonous drum beat every song without variation. His idea of a fill is to hit the tomtom once. Everything sounds the same. He would have to be the most uncreative drummers of all time. I've never even seen him open his hi-hat. If you think I am exaggerating, just watch any ACDC video and observe. To sum up, he's just a human metronome. I'm certainly no drummer, but even I could do what he does.
Get it on

I thought at last something positive about Phil Rudd and then a tirade of negatives from a comment who admits their not even a drummer. ACDC are the best and it takes a team to make a band great. Give Phil a break
Wonderful story

Great to get a positive story on Phil Rudd. Well deserved. as for you Amnesia Oasis, try doing it yourself and let's hear from you again when you've been successful and earned as much money as he has.

What is your point? That's like saying that I unless I am a chef, I am not in a position to give my opinion about the taste of a prepared meal ???

he has copped enough breaks from our justice system, and being the 86th best drummer, that's only someone who has compiled a list opinion, once played with ACDC now just plays with himself!!!!, at least we have not have had to endure any "bad boy rocker" antics from him lately, but I guess visits from the constabulary at odd hours checking on his bail conditions will do that, and 86th give me strength, that's a claim to what?, and has it made him a better person?, money doesn't buy you class?, and ACDC the best, well that's only your opinion, and musical taste.
Credit where it's due.

Poor old Phil has had a lot of bad press (mostly deserved and he seems to be expert at auto foot shooting) but talent is talent and it deserves recognition. Amnesia Oasis has a right to his very well expressed opinion, just like any of us, but he admits it is not necessarily an INFORMED opinion. Be that as it may, Phil Rudd's peers have voted him as one of the best and I'm sure this has come as a glimmer in the dark he is currently experiencing. Everybody deserves a break occasionally; there's no need to put the boot in when a man is down.

Anybody could sit down behind a drum kit for ten minutes and learn pretty much any of the ACDC songs that have ever been recorded. Phil Rudd has never done anything outstanding. Although a drummer's primary task is to maintain the beat which to his credit he does, he maintains it so mechanically, like a human metronome. He could be replaced by any nine-year-old who has had two weeks of drum lessons. If you play the "Back in Black" album and listen to how many times you hear the exact same drum beat you will see what I'm talking about. Just being a member of a famous group like ACDC does not mean you are a skilled musician. Just look at the example of Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. He could hardly play a note on the bass.
Winner

"he's just a human metronome" Sums it up quite nicely.

Credit where credit is due, but Sunlive took the opportunity to mention the bad, as did others.
Well done Phil

Pay no attention to all the negative comments. You have achieved a lot whereas they have probably achieved nothing themselves that comes anywhere near you. I hope that the home detention has enabled you to get your addictions under control.

He's also managed to get off-beat during his "career." Hardly illustrious.

The mere fact that he is 86 places DOWN from the #1 position speaks more than a 1000 words. Need I say more ?

Surley even someone like you know that there are more than 100 drummers in the world. Out of a total world population of oh a couple of billion to place in the top 100 people is totally amazing. This is why he can buy lots of Ferraris and welll ..,you can just dream.....

Golly, some of the commentators have a real "hate on" for poor old Ruddy. Say what you like at least he pays his way, eh, lot more than a lot of others of our fair country can say, anybody seen him with his hand out?. Like him or hate him at least he worked for what he got, shame he blows so much on dope, but that's his business!, and as far as music goes every body's different or is that a problem as well, I love ACADACA, go Ruddy, he he.
THIS IS AWESOME

Obvious conclusion

In the March 31st 2016 edition of Rolling Stone Greatest Drummer Rankings article When expounding the criterion used on which the rankings were based on, RS included the following caveat. I quote: "One important caveat: we used rock and pop as our rubric, so a drummer's work needed to directly impact that world (as we define it, of course) to make the list." From this preambular point in the article we can reasonably deduce that Phil Rudd's unimaginative mediocre drumming is of such inconsequential significance that it has had extremely minimal impact in the world of "rock and pop" as reflected in his 86/100 position.
Obvious Conclusion

My obvious conclusion of Amnesia Oasis is that they have an axe to grind. Either that or they are particularly bored and have nothing else to do with their time. Phil you rock, listen to none of this negative rubbish.

You have a right to feel anyway you want to, but can you seriously say ANYONE (specifically, yourself...) could do what Phil Rudd has done with his music? And why so deprecating about ONLY 86th? KenworthLogger made the point; there are many drummers in the world; 86th is an achievement. Excellence in ALL fields of endeavour should be acknowledged and encouraged, not torn down and rubbished. OK, you don't like the man; we got that. I'm sure he speaks very highly of you... :-)
Best Drummer
Posted on 08-04-2016 17:12 | By GreertonCynic
Someone asked "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?" - John answered "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles." And "Left Hook" Rudd is 72 places behind. He could be replaced by a black plastic box in about 10 minutes.
Chalk and cheese

The marked difference between the unimaginative monotonous drumming style of Phil Rudd and the creative styles of more adventurous drummers becomes clearly evident if we listen to the same song first played by ACDC and then played by another band. Take for example "Highway to Hell". If we listen to the ACDC version we hear that same old repetitive 4/4 beat that we hear in all ACDC songs. (Except the ones that Chris Slade played on). Then listen to Mikkey Dee's more creative syncopated drumming and time changes on the Motorhead version of the same song. You will immediately notice how Dee's drumming nuances enhance the overall quality thus giving it a superior sound. This is why RS ranked so many other drummers above Rudd. The proof is there for the listening.

Ok if Rudd could be replaced with a plastic box in 10 minutes why wasnt he? No one pays you millions if you are not worth it. To be in the top 100 of anything in the world is amazing.
idiotic
Posted on 11-04-2016 10:54 | By CC8
WHAT an idiotic statement, style is different for every performer , amnesia obviously has an axe to grind, maybe SHE was rejected! In any case I am sure Phil lives by the same motto as myself.. "whatever somebody else thinks of me , is NONE of my business"

I wouldn't read too much into this list as Buddy Rich came in at 15 BEHIND Charlie Watts and a few other drummers not of his calibre !!! Even John Bonham (who came in at No 1) was in awe of Buddy Rich... you tube him if you don't believe Rich was the greatest of all time. Rudd is, by the way, a very good drummer and deserves to be in the top 100... well that's my 2 cents anyway.
Good news

Even judge Thomas Ingram who presided over his court case said in his final summing up that Rudd's "drumming wasn't anything special". (quote from July 2015, Tauranga Courthouse)

You sound so bitter because you have amounted to nothing while Rudd is a very good and very wealthy drummer. Nothing like sour grapes ah Amnesia?
