Call for road beautification

Mount and Papamoa residents could be greeted by tree-lined entrances to their suburbs if proposals by Tauranga City Councillor Steve Morris get the go ahead through an amendment to Council's long term plan in June.

Steve is advocating for both Maunganui Road at the Mount and Domain Road in Papamoa to have their painted median strips replaced with a grassed median including trees such as on Cameron Rd in Tauranga.

'The most cost-effective time to upgrade the look and feel of our suburbs is during planned road works and upgrades,” says Steve.

Traffic modelling is currently underway to determine whether Domain Road remains a two-lane road or becomes four-lanes as currently budgeted.

'Either way, Domain Road needs to be reformed and widened whether it has two lanes or four.”

Steve says the relatively low cost of upgrading the Maunganui and Domain roads medians will come as a surprise to residents because of the reduced area of tar-seal required and heavy duty base-course that sits under a road.

The upgrades will also attract NZTA subsidies for safety improvements.

'For low cost we can have an attractive entrance to New Zealand's premier beachside holiday destinations and create a streetscape that is worthy of the pride our residents take in their own homes and gardens.

'But we need to plan for it now before the upgrades in Papamoa take place in the short term and the road works in the medium term at the Mount. Otherwise the opportunity to do it cost-effectively is lost for another 20 years.”

road beautification

perhaps its time to look at fruit trees rather than ones that neither feed the population or provide flowers for the bees

waste of money

Why dont they fix the storm water problem before doing this..no wonder our rates increase all the time when they want to waste money doing stuff like this

road upgrade

Posted on 05-04-2016 13:25 | By matassa@ihug.co.nz

whatever they do the priority has to be an upgrade of this road preferably 4 lanes but a minimum of 2 wide lanes with footpaths both sides this is now one very busy road

Road Beautification. Ha!

I think the council had better start mowing the lawns on the existing before adding more grass median strips. It is a disgrace to our lovely city.

Fine if money grows on trees

Otherwise it's going to be more expensive upkeep. I can just see the tree pruners and lawn mowers with two safety trucks in front and back either sad and one person actually doing the work.

Overit

What about this

Domain road is one of the evacuation routes for a tsunami. Is it a good idea to clutter it up with trees?

bit pointless

Posted on 05-04-2016 21:28 | By rotovend

maybe a light rail or something practical and yes drains and things that make a city work are more important than this . Lets face it when you drive into the Mount you see Maccas and Butger King classy

Hmmmm

Posted on 05-04-2016 22:33 | By How about this view!

Another councillor wanting to restrict the road width and cause bottlenecks. We should be spending ratepayer money on improving the flow of traffic around the city as a whole and not planting trees and grass on our roads. We have far too many bottlenecks in high volume areas, that are adding to the misery and discontent of many voting ratepayers, why add more? I suggest that those wishing to be a councillor or mayor should be forced to sit on any of our city buses (Particularly those that go anywhere near the 15th ave/hospital area and the Bayfair/Hewletts rd area) from 7am until 9.30am and 2pm until 6pm and experience the city that they want to work for.

permit cost

Posted on 05-04-2016 23:51 | By jjrk

is this where the $30 to $40 thousand permit cost goes to? f that.... make it cheaper to build houses then your rate payer base will grow faster then think about growing tree medians

We do not need it Steve, come on now, how much did this all cost, you try living on a pension,oh thats right you will have a job forever at TCC and a big fat payout when finised, you do not care about the people your grand schemes at our costs, we are already in debt (TCC)dont add to this, my thinking is that someone in (TCC) has a finger in contracting for (TCC) and making money from the TROUGH,the workers run (TCC)all 525 of them,it needs to be tipped up and shake out the dead wood, and bring it down to half, and has there been someone in (TCC) been out on a buying spree for brand new cars and utes, whats wrong with what ya got,oh thats right it is not your money,we are in DEBT,thats right you dont CARE,teddy bear signing off 10-4 and goodbye,Thanks NO1 in the Bay.

So then the trees grow wonderfully and the roots bugger up the road surface both sides. Then there is a big time wasting debate from Tree huggers about cutting down the trees ... around and around in circles we go yet again ....
