Teens left roadside in bus nightmare

The treatment of two teenagers left stranded after one of them was sick on an Intercity bus has left a Tauranga mother furious.

A driver of an Intercity bus left two 16-year-olds in Willow Street on last week in what the company says was a 'miscommunication”.

InterCity has apologised after one of its bus drivers left two teenagers in Willow Street. File photo.

Tania Irvine, posted a scathing comment on InterCity's public Facebook page, saying her son had asked to get off simply to get some clean clothes out of his luggage after he was sick.

"The driver said no worries and pulled over, told the kids that he would be there in a minute to open the locker.

"They stepped off, leaving all their stuff on the bus – phones, wallets, everything – the bus driver then shut the door and drove off. Leaving two 16-year-olds in the rain at the side of the road with nothing."

InterCity general manager Sam Peate says on Wednesday that the incident was a result of a miscommunication between the teenagers and the driver.

"They got off and he saw them walk away and he carried on, but it appears [the teens] had an expectation they would get back on."

Close to 1000 people have shared Tania's post, and multiple people have posted on InterCity's Facebook page, claiming they will boycott the service as a result.

Sam says both teens were refunded their fares and given free tickets to the next available service, which took them to Wellington, via Taupo.

Tania's post went on to say: "We finally got hold of InterCity to be told we would get a full refund and they had been transferred to the later bus at 9.10am and that their luggage and personal items would be waiting for them in Taupo.

"So we thought all good, got them home, change of clothes and put them on the next bus."

The luggage was not waiting for them in Taupo. They were instead reunited with their bags in Wellington.

Her son's soiled jumper and baseball cap had been thrown away, she says.

'How dare you do that. This is theft. They did not abandon them these items, they were taken from them when the bus driver left them on the side of the road and took off.”

InterCity confirmed some soiled items on the bus were thrown away when the bus was cleaned.

Sam says he had been speaking to Tania, and InterCity had apologised, offered to replace her son's clothes and issued him with travel vouchers.

"There are definitely some things we have learned from this. There was that miscommunication,” says Sam.

"We really want to make sure we are clearer in future. If people get off the bus, do they want to get back on?"

In regard to any disciplinary action being taken against the driver, Sam says: "I can't comment on that for confidentiality reasons, but this is something we take seriously."

I received an emergency call recently when my daughters friend tried to return to Wellington by bus with her very young baby, it took a call to Intercity head office and a lot of running around and rushing here and there to get her back on the bus. A nightmare trip for a young mother and baby and not even a apology..let alone a refund. Believe or not she was let down by intercity twice on the same trip and ended up paying twice.

Not just inter-city

We have been given the run around by Naked Bus as well - we had booked a trip to auckland and received an email to say that they had discontinued that service and would we like to be booked on another service. I asked them what time and to confirm the booking - got confirmation of a booking a month ahead!!! after much complaining have finally got correct booking - just in time for our trip - can't get hold of Naked Bus or Mana Bus on their phone either. I was going to go on inter-city but just as well I didn't - they seem to all as bad as each other.

Sounds like....

it might be time to have the drivers IQ tested? Would be interested to find out if he had one? Great news the kids are ok... no thanks to the nut behind the wheel!

Missing a few facts ...

Ms Irvine said her son had asked the bus driver if he could grab a change of clothing from the locker, Mr Peate said the driver "didn't recall" the conversation and this was verified by other passengers on the bus. "They had just said they wanted to be let off the bus because one of them was sick." He said the driver then saw the pair walk away. keep in mind this was 400 meters from the Tauranga departure point. Yes, clearly some misunderstandings but the teenager wasn't 'travel sick', clearly unwell before he boarded. Why did they leave the soiled clothes on the bus if it was the intention to change them? The driver saw them walk away, OR so he thought!
