May date for $5.25M Te Puna roundabout

A two-lane $5.25 million roundabout will be built at the intersection of Te Puna and Minden roads in May.

It's hoped the new roundabout could reduce crashes by about 80 per cent.

The NZ Transport Agency approved funding for the property purchase and construction of the roundabout in March last year, and announced that Downer had been awarded the contract yesterday.

Subject to approvals and property purchase, preliminary work was due to start in May and would be split over two construction seasons with work due to be completed by mid-2017.

The work will be split over two construction seasons and the roundabout is expected to be complete in mid-2017.

The Transport Agency's acting Bay of Plenty highways manager, Chris Young, says the new roundabout will make it safer and easier to travel as traffic increases on SH2.

'Roundabouts naturally slow traffic and reduce the chance of head on or side impact crashes, reducing the risk of death or serious injury if someone makes a mistake and crashes.

'Our data shows that changing a T-intersection to a roundabout reduces death and serious injury crashes by 90 per cent, while the total number of crashes reduces between 25 to 80 per cent.”

The total cost of the project including preliminary works and property purchase is $7.5 million.

The Te Puna Memorial Hall will be deconstructed later this year to make way for the new roundabout, with the Transport Agency working closely with the Hall Committee and Western Bay of Plenty District Council on providing a suitable alternative.

Chris says the roundabout is part of a $12 million package of works that have been rolled out to boost safety on SH2 while the Transport Agency finalises a long term plan for the route.

'The majority of crashes on this road are head-on and run off road,” he says.

'While we cannot necessarily prevent someone making a mistake and having a crash we can create a more forgiving road environment so that people don't pay for a mistake with their lives.

'This has been our focus over the past two years, with more than $5 million invested on safety improvements on SH2 between Bethlehem and Waihi.

'We have installed 10km of guard rail to prevent run-off road crashes, improved visibility at intersections by removing trees and other hazards and installed wide centre lines which are proved to reduce the risk of head on crashes.

'We have also been working with Police to educate motorists, as driver distraction is behind many of the crashes on this route.”

Chris says State Highway 2 from Pokeno to Waihi is a major focus for the Transport Agency over the next few years.

'The goal is to improve safety and deliver more reliable travel times on this route. However, any changes need to meet the strategic direction of the corridor and the region, supporting growth and development."

roundabout speeding

Just hope and pray that the design of the roundabout does limit the speed of vehicles as they approach the intersection. Will there be traffic lights for pedestrian crossing?

pedestrian overbridge please?

another waste of money. Also the people gettimg off the bus appear to be trapped on a busy road? I would hope a pedestrian over-bridge is included in these plans as lights will just stop traffic

Pedestrians

Yes, what provision has been made for pedestrians wanting to navigate this area? Also, what's happened to the petrol station, diary, etc?

WHY so long??

Te Puna bypass

What happened to the plans to bypass Te Puna? Build the bypass, don't make it a toll road, and the reduced traffic flow will negate the need to spend $7.5 million. Also, the construction of the bypass will not interfere with traffic until it is time to link up to existing roads. Or is this going to be like the Maungatapu roundabout where millions were spent on a new traffic light system so we would not need to pay for a tunnel. Yeah right.

Where is ...

It's starting. A very dangerous intersection. Can't wait till they do something about the omokaroa and Wairoa rd intersections to. It's been great seeing all the upgrades to this road over the months. I hope that there will be more upgrades for the volume of traffic however.

I coulg dump a pile of dirt and some concrete on here and build this roundabout for about 50 grand and pocket the other 5 mil and would be finished within a week

It seems really sad...

..that NZ$5.25 million dollars needs to be spent on doing something as simple as this..and why?..because we are told are continually told we "make mistakes" and need to be protected from ourselves. How about this crazy idea..we are encouraged to not, and get punished for, making mistakes (on the road,in line with the reason we have achieved a drivers licence) ..so we stop doing it, therefore no major problem to fix in the first place?. I will agree this particular intersection does need attention (although to define it as a "T" intersection somewhat baffles me), but if we were all "reminded" not to make so many mistakes, and indeed almost "normalise" and "expect" them to happen, then our cash needn't be spent in the first place.
