Riders rule waves at Papamoa

Jetskis tore up the waves at Papamoa today in races organised by the Tauranga Jet Sport Association for the North Island Summer Series.

The race was at Harrisons Cut and saw local riders go up against people from around the North Island.

Event organiser Leanne Brown says it was a great day that was unfortunately dampened by some bad weather half way through.

'We had quite a good crowd here to start with but then the rain came,” she says.

Up to 200 people attended to watch 47 jetskis over five hours of action. Along with the races, there was also a demonstration by some freestyler jetski riders who entertained the crowd with their skills.

'We saw some pretty amazing tricks. It was pretty impressive,” says Leanne.

The day was also attended by the 2009 World Champion, Sam Harvey, who won his race.

Leanne says he used the event as training for an upcoming competition across the ditch, the Australian Flatwater Nationals.
