Sol3 Mio’s second encore tonight

A near capacity audience at ASB Arena enjoyed last night's Sol3 Mio performance so much, they clapped and foot stomped until the trio returned for three encores.

In fact, Sol3 Mio's appearance in Tauranga has been so eagerly anticipated, they will present a second concert tonight after the first sold out in record time.

Tonight will be the last time the group visits Tauranga for a while as Amitai Pati, Moses Mackay and Pene Pati are taking time out to pursue individual opera careers – but Sol3 Mio, they say will be back.

The three classically trained Samoan singers formed their group in 2011 and their rise to fame has been rapid and impressive.

Brothers Pene and Amitai used to sing in the rest home their father worked at, and Moses for his mother's occupational therapy patients before they all embarked on classical training.

Since then their undisputed vocal talents have seen the group members win competitions, perform around the world, release albums and develop a following of fans across all age groups and musical genre tastes.

However, it's more than musical talent which has helped propel the group's success. It's also their youth, infectious sense of humour and ability to communicate and engage audiences in a way which has them adored by fans.

This was evidenced by their enthusiastic reception at Baypark last night where the over whelming majority of the audience was composed of Baby Boomers, with a number of young people and children present as well.

Opera is what the trio excel at, as evidenced by the spell-binding renditions of the songs ‘O Sol3 Mio, Marechiare and Nella Fantasia in the first act.

The second half of the evening presented the other side of Sol3 Mio's repertoire, and their ability as musicians too as they sang and accompanied themselves for the popular songs Jamaican Farewell, Blue Bayou and Yellow Bird. Dance with my father left many in the audience misty -eyed.

By the time they reached That's Amore the crowd was on its feet singing and dancing, a reflection of the ability of the group to make music from classical to contemporary accessible and fun for all ages.

What a very special night with three outstanding young men with stunning voices and stage presence. I hope tonight's crowd has just as good a night as we did last night.
