People urged to conserve water

Tauranga City Council is asking people to limit their water usage this long weekend, especially in the Mount and Papamoa areas.

This week's high temperatures have started to catch up with the city's water reserves.

People are being asked not to leave sprinklers unattended.

'Water reservoirs are expected to come under additional pressure with an influx of visitors to the coast over the long weekend,” says a statement from the council.

'The impact of cruise ships and events on the water supply system have been planned for but we are still asking people to be extra mindful about their water use.”

Things to consider include having slightly shorter showers and not leaving sprinklers unattended.

'Staff will keep a close watch on reservoir levels over the next few days. '

Pay for a supply they need to to supply it, + with each cruise ship how many 1,000s of litres do they take ?

A little anomaly here!!!

so how much were the "jet sprint" organisers charged for leaving the hose running?, or is salt water used?, we can only wash one arm pit but boats can have fun in a "man made" river, another well thought out press release from TCC!!!

To people who complain stop and think. Anyone using water pays for it. have you noticed the meters on the Standpipes for road works. The only ones who do not pay is when they flush the mains and that is to give us a good water. I am not sure what water the Jetsprints use but you can be assured they are paying for it with what they charge, which is still a fair cost in today's market. Just take care is what theya re saying. Papamoa is growing like Otumoetai use to and we had heavy restrictions, but fair ones.

Once Upon A Time

before there were water meters, we were asked to conserve water. Then Water Meters were mooted at the great cost then of at least $10 million dollars with an ongoing annual cost of historically amounted to $500,000 per annum. At the time I argued that building more water reservoirs was the solution to summer shortages, but TCC said that Water Meters would help to conserve water because each user would pay and that would mean they would use less water. Council ripped up tens of thousands of driveway entrances and installed these things which should have fixed the problem. Not so, it seems. In spite of having some reservoirs built, we wasted the $10million by not building more reservoirs. Now we are having to conserve again. Build the reservoirs from the sale of all those meters and charge a standard water fee for each household!! Problem solved.

Yes we pay for water but there is NOT endless supply use yr common sense.

I came here 15 years ago at the end of the last summer that there were water restrictions. Then water meters were introduced. If you bothered to check your facts you would find that the water savings once people started having to pay for their water were huge. People checked how much they used, fixed leaks etc. For years total water consumption was below the levels of water restrictions. And if I recall, the building of a reservoir was delayed on the basis that it wasn't needed. All of this during times of considerable growth in households in Tauranga. It appears that now may well be a time for a new reservoir, as much to cope with climate change as overall growth. But that is not a basis for your whinge.

Actually the council ain't got

Obviously with our growing population, influx of holiday makers, and huge amount of cruiseliner passengers, we need more water reservoirs. Oh! but lets spend money everywhere but there.
