Bus shelters on the move

The recent sight of a city bus shelter moving away from 15th Avenue on the back of a truck is no cause for alarm, says city council senior traffic engineer Wayne Thompson.

It will be replaced with a new one in the next five to 10 days.

Other bus shelters in Maunganui Road and Waihi Road are being relocated this week as they are replaced with Adshell shelters that include advertising panels.

'They have got the fancy shelters with the advertising panel in them,” says Wayne.

'It's just they prefer to have the advertising panel ones on the more higher trafficked routes, because of the exposure to the advertising.”

The new shelters with the illuminated advertising panels have to be connected to power.

'What they do is they pay us a commercial rental to have the shelters installed on our roads, and they give us a percentage of the advertising fee,” says Wayne.

'That goes back into our bus shelter maintenance. It's good all round. Obviously there's sometimes a delay in getting the old ones out and the new ones in.

'It's quite a nice shelter to have and they change the panels quite regularly. They look after the maintenance on them and everything on them. We give them approval to occupy the road reserve for a fee and we get a percentage back, so it's all good.”

Adshell only has the budget to replace a few of the shelters each year, says Wayne.

The existing shelters are being moved to other parts of town where there is a requirement for them on the Go Bus network.

Advertise the bus routes

I am mystified why most bus shelters have no maps or routes of the buses they serve. You can text to see when the next bus is due. Lack of information is pathetic in this modern age.

Yeah, got the bloody things

in other towns. Passengers sitting in the shelters out of the weather CANNOT see the busses coming - the advertising panels hide the view of the approaching buses, AND the bus drivers CANNOT see the passengers sitting in the shelters out of the weather, and thus the buses sail on past the shelters leaving the passengers behind............. Its all about

Can't see. The advertising panel is on the side away from the bus approach. A good way to save costs.

I could be wrong here but in NZ don't the buses always approach the stops right hand side, ie the side of the shelter with the clear glass panel? Shouldn't be too hard to see a big yellow bus approaching.

Who looks at the advertising. we are supposed to be concentrating on driving not reading. I agree with other comments about not being able to see bus coming. Also who is paying for this change. rate payers my guess .

MAYBE.

First, Wayne may be better to put the Bus users/ ratepayers at ease by sitting in a Bus shelter himself with panels and without to check before ratepayers money is spent. Yes, good question how much per new Canopy is this Costing ratepayers? to replace the old but still useable with the new?

My bus stop is does not have a shelter or a seat. Would be grateful for anything. I would imagine advertisers would have to pay for their adverts. That would negate the cost, surely

Crack up how many miss the bus by not looking eg texting looking the wrong way or busy talking, most drivers will stop if they are seniors but anyone else not move off the seat the bus will in most cases sail on past, yeah cant blame the drivers really when so many sit and use the shelters has drinking stops

I think it is aimed at people waiting at the bus shelter and people on the bus when it stops there. The authorities assume you have the brains to ignore things that are not pertinent to the task in hand when you are driving, thus giving you a licence. If that assumption is misplaced maybe you should hand your licence back?

I should not really comment until the new advertising shelters are up, but they found awful.

Spending again

No need, nothing wrong with what was there, perfectly functional. So the real reason can only be that they want advert boards there so as to be able to employ more TCC staff.

Why so negative

Posted on 27-01-2016 16:51 | By Snappered

Man why is it that the only people that seem to comment on these feeds seem to be cynics or take a negative approach. Think u will find Adshell are paying to install their shelters ("they only have the budget to replace a few shelters a year") and they pay for the maintenance, a rental and commission so how can it be a negative thing if a company is willing to pick up the tab for what would normally be a ratepayer cost. Yes they are making money out of the advertising but it wouldn't make sense to do it for free, right? AND the bonus is that the existing shelters are going to be re-directed to another bus stop which is going to be of benefit to users of the bus shelters in those areas who have previously not had any shelter. win/win

If you check out the bus shelters in other towns I think that you will find that the "pictured" one is actually one that is being removed. The new ones are almost totally enclosed with advertising panels. Also, the local rif raf seem to take great delight in hitting the glass panels of the advertising panels with rocks or what ever they have to hand. As the panels are made of the same style of glass as in car window screens, they shatter into THOUSANDS of little bits with the slightist of hits.

People are figuring out how TCC operates, the more you look the worse it is, name something I can illustrate the plundering of rates money for no apparent reason.

People are figuring out or just making uninformed assumptions? Unless you were working in the council, I don't think you would be able to make an informed opinion or what is taken in to account when making decisions. There will always be pros and cons for different parties when they decide how and where they allocate ratepayer money. Perhaps you need to go and explore small costal strips if you want to live in a place that doesn't progress to keep up with its expanding population... Either that or explore opportunities for employment at the council or as a Councillor so that you can make a difference rather than joining all the negative nancies who have everything to complain about and nothing to be thankful for on the sidelines.

No win

You are in a no win situation Wayne. Maybe the Council could employ staff to go out there with big market umbrellas to stand under. Whatever the Council say they are doing people find something to moan about it.

What ever twist and turn you create, the bottom line is that there is no reason to change the bus shelters, nothing wrong with them at all. Well you know next you will be telling me that Auckland Council merger is a roaring success and some.
