A dose of colour and culture transformed the avenues today as the Tauranga Indian community marked the birth of their religious leader with prayer and costume.

Thousands of people gathered on Borrows Street as the parade made its way from the Sikh Temple along city streets to Devonport Road and back again.

Sikh Committee spokesperson Puran Singh says the parade is about different cultures coming together.

'We want a peaceful and multicultural New Zealand and the event has an open invitation; it's for people to come together, so we can all celebrate in peace.”

Today's festivities will conclude with an afternoon of free entertainment and food, says Puran.

'Children take part by playing harmoniums – the youngest is four years old.”

Sikh member Raman Kaur says sharing is part of the Sikh philosophy. Read more here.

The Indian community is integrating really well into the kiwi way of life. Block off the roads and hold a parade.

I think it's wonderful that the Sikhs are able to get out and celebrate their culture with pride. The colour, pomp and ceremony is awesome. Great food too. This is exactly the right sort of inclusion that other cultures and religions can learn from.
