Bay attraction set to open

If you are stuck for a Christmas idea, then maybe the Bay of Plenty's latest tourist attraction is the thing for you.

Opening next month, the Redwoods Tree Walk is a 553m-long walkway that consists of a series of 21 suspension bridges traversing the gaps between 22 majestic Redwood trees.

The bridge sections gradually incline from 6m in height to a stunning 12m at its peak before again descending to 6m.

The Tree Walk provides a birds-eye perspective of an already world famous forest setting among the 100-year-old giants, and has been described as an inspiring, refreshing and rejuvenating nature experience.

The walk is the brainchild of German entrepreneur Alex Schmid and his wife Andrea, and is designed for use without harnesses or protective gear. It is suitable for all ages.

The only prerequisite is that all users must be able to walk the entire 553m. There are 23 bridge sections connected to 22 living decks and it will take walkers around 30 minutes to complete.

Customers must have a reasonable level of fitness and be able to walk unaided, including young children. Children cannot be carried at any stage along the walk, and there is a maximum weight of 120kg.

There is an opening summer offer of $25 per adult, $15 per child (5-to-14 years) and a family deal of $79 (two adults and up to three children). It will open from 8.30am until about 6pm.

Vouchers can be purchased at the Rotorua i-site on Fenton Street and at the Redwoods Visitor Information Centre. Alternatively, please visit their website.

Also keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates and their opening schedule.

Must be aimed directly at overseas tourists. Can't imagine too many locals willing to fork out so much for a stroll through some trees.
