New cycling corridor opens

Rotorua locals showed their support for making their city even more cycle friendly with the opening of the Green Corridor this afternoon.

The nearly two kilometre Green Corridor, which stretches from Government Gardens, across the inner city and through Kuirau Park, connects with cycling pathways east and west of the city.

An official opening of the pathway got underway at 5pm today with large numbers of cyclists including Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick and the Frocks on Bikes group taking part in a parade on the Green Gorridor route along Hinemoa St.

Participants wound their way along Tutanekai St through the Night Market and down Haupapa St to Kuirau Park where theparade concluded.

Throughout the parade participants were kept entertained with a Highland piped band, the Taiko drumming circle and a ukulele quintet.

Steve says it was a great way to open the corridor and expected it to be a popular with cyclists both locally and for tourists visiting the city.

'We had a lot of people who couldn't wait for this to open.”
