A splattering of showers forecast

A few morning showers, then fine is the forecast for today, according to the MetService.

Cloudy periods are also expected tomorrow, with more showers predicted for Monday.

The MetService has issued a weather watch for the region as a front embedded in a strong northwest flow is expected to bring a burst of heavy rain to parts of the upper North Island.

A very strong northwest flow develops over the country on Sunday morning, then eases and turns southwest early Monday morning.

A period of northwest gales is forecast for southern and central New Zealand, with severe gales likely in a number of places.

While the Bay is expected to miss most of the rain and wind forecast for the rest of the country, there is a chance for showers to be heavy at times.

The situation looks to improve, with fine weather on the cards on Tuesday and Wednesday.
