BOP Police warn of Microsoft phone scam

It's no secret that scam artists will go out of their way to deceive you, but with a little common sense you'll save yourself a tonne of stress and money.

That's the message from Bay of Plenty Police today after they received five reports of suspicious phone calls from fraudsters claiming to be Microsoft employees.

The callers each requested access to people's computer and credit details

Posting to their Facebook page this morning, police confirmed that fortunately, all five people recognised it as a scam and hung up.

'We don't want to have anyone caught out by this,” the post reads, 'so please make your friends and family aware that this scam appears to be active again in our district.

'Whatever the approach by the caller, our advice is to never provide details relating to your computer to strangers over the phone.”

Over the weekend, two people in the Otago town of Alexandra were deceived out of thousands of dollars by fraudsters claiming to be Microsoft employees.

It was part of a 24-hour blitz that saw a number of Kiwis around the country contacted by scam artists claiming that viruses had been detected on their home computers.

During these calls, the fraudsters asked for remote access to the victim's devices to fix the problem, while some were also asked for their credit card information.

IF THERE'S A SLIGHT PAUSE AFTER ANSWERING

Posted on 17-08-2015 14:34 | By Seriously?

Our household has also had these calls. If there is a 1-2 second pause/delay after you answer the phone, generally it is one of the "crank calls". The phone number is dialled by a computer and when the line is answered at your end, it will automatically pass over to an operator who will then launch into scam-mode. If I get the delay/pause immediately after I answer I just hang up straight away.

Oh dear

When will people realise that WINDOWS WILL NEVER CALL YOU. And a whistle by the phone to use on such people is good

Don't hang up

They are normally calling from offshore so don't hang up but ask them to hold the line while you turn off something or take care of something. That way it costs them heaps for the call at international rates.

I have fun talking to

these guys. I make them tell me in detail what exactly the problem is and exactly what they want me to do & to finish off I ask them how to do it since I don't have a computer......silence at the other end!!

The cheek of the devil

I got a call the other day from one of these trolls. I abused him and hung up. He rang straight back and was very indignant that I had hung up on him. Which I did again. Bugger rang back another 5 times before I left the phone off the hook. Sad thing is Spark have used people with similar accents to make legitimate calls. Hear the accent say computer and an auto response hangs up.

Hardly an old scam

This scam has been around for years just hang up, or play along and have fun with them....

It's all on YouTube

Posted on 18-08-2015 08:03 | By SonnyJim

These trolls have rung me for years and I have lead them on a bit for fun when their 'Technical Supervisor'comes on-line. If you persist to the end, give them a made up credit card number, it drives them nuts! Nowadays I just ask the caller to tell their boss it is a scam, and hang up. They get 'owned' on YouTube by computer technicians - very funny, but some coarse language so be 'forewarned'.

Reverse the Role

Yes they are out there!! What I do when they phone is tell them that I'm on another call, can I have their contact details and I will call them back, next thing they hang up without giving out their information - funny that!!

Nice one dumbkof2. I told them I had a Mac too, thinking that would throw them off but no a few minutes later a "mac tech "rang. Got to give them an A for effort.

scam

Another good idea is just put your ph on speaker. Every now and then just say is that right or how do i do that or tell them its not working. If they ask if there is anyone else in the house they can speak to just tell then no and then go on just chatting away to someone

Track them?

Posted on 18-08-2015 12:20 | By Watchdog

I'd love to know how to trace their calls and let the appropriate authorities know. Surely Spark, Vodafone, etc could trace these calls from their source. Any good ideas?

On a Cold Wintery Night...

There is nothing more entertaining than seeing how long you can keep these "technical" people on the phone for. A friend and I have a wager to see who can keep them on the line the longest. My record at present is 51 minutes.......I am sure I can do better though.

Funny That

I put the phone by the TV.Sound but no picture funny that.Perhaps they could fix TV.s. Ha Ha

Can't believe people are still falling for it

Posted on 18-08-2015 15:46 | By The Sage

I know people, without computers, who have been rung and, when they told the caller to stuff off, were told not to be rude.....this coming from someone trying to scam you. Also know someone who simply hung up on them and they called back and said it was rude to hang up and then the caller hung up to get their own back.

Ancient scam

Found them since years ago, and until yesterday I still find reports about them at https://www.callercenter.com/940-594-9906.html/2. I don't know how much money they have earned from residents, but they are working really hard on this. I believe they will be a good employee if they have a real job.

Linux gentoo

Posted on 27-08-2015 00:10 | By Todd

tell them your running a Linux os for the first time and you appreciate their help and ask them what to type in the terminal to start up the computer. just keep mentioning grub2 says boot failure. you will never get another call from them.

Air Horn

Posted on 27-08-2015 12:58 | By Mackka

I have a marine air horn by the phone and give them a blast of that !!! Probably wreck their ear drums - but a few months later they come back for another dose! Seems there is no stopping them.
