Two audition days will be held at the Mauao Performing Arts Centre in Mount Maunganui, with the first taking place on Sunday, August 9, and then again on Saturday, August 15. Both auditions days run from 12pm to 5pm.

There will be two components to the audition process: an individual audition where people will perform prepared monologues, and a workshop audition using short scenes from Twelfth Night.

This upcoming show will be directed by seasoned and much-loved local actor Dylan Frewin, who has been involved in over 40 productions on local stages.

He is currently the resident Drama Tutor at the Mauao Performing Arts Centre, and is also playing the lead role in Tauranga Musical Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

'I've always loved Twelfth Night,” he explains. 'I remember reading and seeing it when I was a younger man and now, as I'm preparing for the upcoming show, I'm finding more and more within the text.

'We've been working on how we want to present Twelfth Night and I've got a pretty clear idea of how I want to work with not only the cast, but also the treatment of the text and characters.”

For the upcoming auditions, actors are asked to prepare a short, two-minute or less monologue of their choice. It can be from any genre including TV and film, and doesn't have to be Shakespearian.

Dylan says they'll offer people three chances to deliver their monologue and the most important things to remember is: 'relax and just enjoy themselves and their craft”.

'It's so easy to audition with your nerves running high, but we'll not be scrutinising people,” he says. 'We want to see what they can offer in terms of confidence and potential, which everyone has in them.”

Dylan is supported by a highly experienced production team, which includes talented local playwright and actress Gin Mabey and SST founders Pascal and Nadine Tibbits.

For Nadine and Pascal, who have produced, directed and performed in many Shakespeare plays in Auckland and Tauranga, SST is the realisation of a dream to create an annual outdoor summer Shakespeare event for the people of Tauranga.

'This is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of history in the making,” says Nadine. 'We are also pleased to announce that we have received funding from Tauranga City Council for this event.”

Rehearsals for Twelfth Night start in early October, with a break for Labour Weekend and over the Christmas/New Year period.
