Blackout in west of city

UPDATE 8.05PM: Some SunLive readers in the affected blackout area report power has been restored to their homes.

Reports are coming in from most areas in the western suburbs, that power is again on in Otumoetai, Brookfield and Bethlehem. PowerCo is still registering some problems and investigations continue.

The western side of Tauranga was in complete darkness for about an hour tonight following a power cut in the area. This photo was taken during tonight power cut and shows that only some areas of Tauranga were affected. Photo: Tracy Hardy.

The cause of the power is under investigation.

Earlier:

A widespread power cut has plunged homes and streets into darkness across much of Tauranga City's western suburbs tonight.

At about 7.20pm power was lost to Otumoetai, Bellevue, Brookfield, Judea, Wairoa, Matua and parts of Te Puna. PowerCo reports the problem lies with power feeders in Otumoetai and is still investigating. The power cut is understood to affect all suburbs west of the Chapel Street causeway.

The black out is also affecting some traffic lights in the city.

PowerCo estimates suggest the power could be restored by 11pm.

More updates to come on SunLive.
