Firefighters are currently dampening down hot spots after a fire broke out in a Merivale home this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a house fire on Oxford Street to find a single storey dwelling completely engulfed in flames.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesperson says the fire now out.

A reporter at the scene says flames were seen leaping from the windows of the home.

There are no reports of injuries at present and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
