Everything is ka pai with the MMQ

It will be an evening of waiata, humour and charm when the Modern Maori Quartet swings into Tauranga next month.

As part of their highly-anticipated national tour, the quartet offers a modern take on the classic Maori showband and will be on stage at Baycourt Community and Arts Theatre on August 11.

MMQ features talented Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School graduates James Tito, Matariki Whatarau, Francis Kora and Maaka Pohatu, who all hail from the four corners of Aotearoa.

Speaking to SunLive, Maaka says the boys are all looking forward to heading out on tour next month.

'It'll be a long time on the road for us,” says Maaka. 'We've got eight shows in Aotearoa first and then head off to Singapore and Malaysia for shows.

'Then we fly to Uzbekistan for the Sharq Taronalari World Music Festival.

'We've played Baycourt once in the past and it was a great gig. The whole crowd were lovely and singing away - it was choice man. We're definitely looking forward to heading back to Tauranga.”

The upcoming national tour will be the first presented by the Performing Arts Network of New Zealand.

PANNZ Touring says the group's signature cabaret show An Evening with the Modern Maori Quartet is one event not to be missed.

'The Modern Maori Quartet are a good looking, suave and multi-talented foursome who love crooning their spin on modern and classic numbers.

'So suit 'em up in their number ones, shine their shoes, hand them a guitar or two and they'll have you melting like golden syrup on a piece of fresh hot fried bread with their signature brand of Maori entertainment.”

This show promises a trip down memory lane into New Zealand's musical past and present, plus recent international hits, all with a unique Modern Maori Quartet twist and flavour.

SunLive has one double pass to give away to one lucky reader who can tell us which school all four members of Modern Maori Quartet graduated from?

Head over to our Competition Section to enter. Entries must be received by Thursday, August 6.
