Cyclone could hit Bay

The MetService is warning the Bay of Plenty could be hit by Cyclone Vania, currently near southern Vanuatu, but edging closer to New Zealand.

Cyclone Vania is expected to move south from the tropics over the weekend and should become reclassified as an 'extra tropical low”.

"Computer output from various global models are now producing a reasonably consistent future track for this system", says MetService Weather Ambassador Bob McDavitt.

There is a possibility it could affect northern and central parts of New Zealand, including the Bay of Plenty, late Monday or more likely Tuesday.

The MetService is only posting a low risk of heavy rain and severe gales for northern and western parts of the North Island and northern parts of the South Island.

"MetService now has moderate confidence that the remnants of Vania may bring a day or two of heavy rain and severe gales to parts of the North Island, and northern regions of the South Island, on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 January."

This system has the potential to bring very stormy conditions to parts of New Zealand and people are advised to remain up to date with the latest forecasts.

The Tauranga and Western Bay Emergency Management Office is advising residents to take note of this MetService information.

"It is a good idea now to ensure you are prepared for this type of event by ensuring drains are clear and loose items of property are secured around their houses," says Civil Defence Officer Alan Pearce.

Are MetService saying

That there is a possibility of a cyclone hitting Tauranga, and also a chance that it won't hit Tauranga? I am definately possibly saying that there is maybe a certain possiblity that MetService may know what they are talking about.
