Smartgrowth Oz study tour

Schooling up council staff on large infrastructure projects is the intention behind an multi-council study tour of Australian developments later this month.

Smartgrowth is organising sending a party of ten delegates across to look at how Australians do sub-divisions.

The Australian study tour will spend three days in Sydney inspecting local housing sites and two days in Queensland.

The tour party includes an NZ Transport Agency rep, SmartGrowth Implementation Manager Duncan Tindall, and delegates from the three Smartgrowth funding partners; BOP Regional Council, Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council – the respective councils paying their own staff costs.

The aim of the study tour is to pick up lessons learnt from Australian experience in; Masterplanned greenfield developments, alternative Infrastructure; alternative infrastructure funding models, and urban regeneration.

While there has been a strong focus on selecting sites that will be relevant to Tauranga, it is also accepted that there are relevant learnings to be had from some larger schemes that will be applicable to the future growth of the sub-region.

A debrief will be provided to the Smartgrowth Implementation committee at the August workshop.

The delegates will be a variety of senior strategic planners and infrastructure manager, says Duncan.

'The investments that we are looking at here over the next few years are in the billions of dollars for the infrastructure, and to be able to cope with the growth of the city,” says Duncan.

It's because of the massive growth spurt anticipated as the Papamoa East and Wairakei developments come on stream over the next decade.

'So it's imperative that we actually make those investment decisions wisely and as I say we are dealing in billions of dollars, so being able to get it right is a good investment,” says Duncan.

Study Tour

As a funder of this venture I am expecting more than just debrief. A full evaluation report plus details of expenditure assessed against projected benefits is the minimum.

Long as they go at their own cost

OZ IS A LOT DIFFERENT FROM NZ

Posted on 13-07-2015 20:16 | By ROCCO

Will learn nothing from this sunshine "holiday" and it will prove to be a complete waste of time and money.Just another junket at BOP ratepayers expense for 10 lucky punters and I see Bay Regional are at it again & clearly haven't learned much from the Christchurch sendoff fiasco a couple of years ago.L>O>L

Council pederige?

Posted on 13-07-2015 21:22 | By YOGI BEAR

Seems the Aussie scenario is typically of NZ, in debt, over spending and rocketing rates, so what exactly are they trying to learn? More of the same, better ways to speed it all up?

Dont We know

Posted on 13-07-2015 21:34 | By Merlin

Dont we know how to do subdivisions in New Zealandsounds like a junket to me

What a rort

Posted on 14-07-2015 03:36 | By Kenworthlogger

Yep another trip for the boys. Why cant they learn over the internet??

Why is it

Posted on 14-07-2015 08:59 | By nerak

these councils cannot lead by example, instead of following others around the country which spend unwisely? I would have thought there should be enough collective brainpower amongst this 'tour' PARTY to do the job properly, at home. Obviously not! Just another ratepayer ripoff. I want a holiday in the sunshine, why not pay my fare, and budget accommodation, bet you lot will do better than that.

stop whinging

Posted on 14-07-2015 09:23 | By tgacentral

so much whinging from the keyboard warriors below. No doubt they are the first to complain if any part of the city growth isn't up to their standard. We are growing very fast and it is important investment is made now to ensure this growth is managed in the best way possible, even if that means a short trip to Australia to learn from their mistakes/successes!

Certainly

Posted on 14-07-2015 10:08 | By How about this view!

There is much to be learned from face to face meetings, BUT, for A SUBDIVISION????? It says a great deal about the talent being employed by our councils and the quality of our tertiary education providers. If we can't plan and develop a subdivision to world class standards using our own talent and skills, what are we paying these seat warmers for? We obviously employ people that couldn't run a bath without supervision!

strange that

Posted on 14-07-2015 10:44 | By cupcake

the first developer of the lakes subdivision has also done subdivisions in Queensland as has the current one. The developers of Te Tumu block lives in Sydney so one has to wonder about this trip.

Yes indeed, no other way to look at it. The internet means that they cant leave the glass box. Really though this is all about rubbing shoulders, rubber necking and scheming and plotting "there".

You have got to be joking, they will not be paying a cent. What makes it all so bad on top of that is that there will be no effect on holidays, they actually think that they are working when there. Nothing good will be achieved here that could not be done on a Video conference call. Except holding hands of course.

Let them go

but provide us with the full cost of the trip, i.e. hotels stayed at, taxi fares, meals and drinks, etc etc. Maybe then we can justify this expenditure.

What a Junket

Posted on 14-07-2015 20:14 | By Jitter

10 people ! How bloody ridiculous.5 more and they could also play rugby there. What is wrong with 2 or 3 surely that is ample to collect any new information and ideas.Talk about a waste of public money. This is another good reason to get rid of Smartgrowth. There is nothing smart about the whole organisation.

We the LOCAL RATEPAYERS.....NOW..KNOW fast accelerating Climate Change is very REAL and also that FAST ocean rises are NOW upon us and contrary to beliefs of hardcore denialist in Councils WHO may I ask is going to pay COMPENSATION when lands these new subdivisions are being built upon like Te Tumu ARE FLOODED. WHO PAYS.This certain to happen within 10/20 years after MAJOR Antarctic Ice Sheet collapses which will in turn cause a sudden abrupt rise in oceans worldwide which will inundate all low lying areas of BOP all the way back to Rotorua. This is REAL folks not some airy fairy event some decades away. It is scheduled within next 10 to 20 years at max if given the rate of very fast and increasing rates of warming at poles. Q? Why go to Aussie when this is the REAL critical issue facing council when building new subdivisions.

So many??

Posted on 15-07-2015 08:19 | By Me again

Are they taking their family members as well. Great holiday for the school holidays ON the rate payers. To learn how else Tcc can make a mess. Tauranga already looks like "the ugliest city out" even from the air.

Wisechief

Posted on 15-07-2015 13:31 | By YOGI BEAR

Correct there, Te Tumu is already a bog/muddy/swamp like. It is no place to build anyway. The climate issues have been seriously underestimated by the supporters of it. Like you indicate, the effects are happening faster that expected, a lot faster. It is expected by 2050 that the sea level will rise 1.3m, but that will happen in less than 1/2 that time. result: the coast lines all over the world will recede rapidly inland. bye-bye seafront by the mile. So of course TCC is going to do it, that will maximize the cost, debt and losses, a TCC specialty and supreme talent at exceeding expectations.

Indecent haste @ obscene cost

Posted on 15-07-2015 18:13 | By ROCCO

Strange that you would go over there as OZ developments are probably worse than NZ unless of course they still run in feet and inches and land shapes and straight lines are pretty much the same the whole world over. BOP have got m2 sizes down about as low as you can go here without living in someone elses house.

Another thought

Posted on 15-07-2015 18:25 | By ROCCO

Have they even bothered to or thought to contact their counterparts to set up this OZ bunfight and associated banqueting. Ihave a nasty feeling we will be reciprocating and welcoming the boat people back here to see how we make a meal of it.

Meals and feasting?

Posted on 15-07-2015 21:14 | By YOGI BEAR

They will very much like to come here and see how to make a meal of it all, next you know it will be "sisters" city stuff and annual pilgrimage to the Aussie-lund Mun.

AUSSIE POPULATION STAGNATING

Posted on 16-07-2015 19:40 | By CONDOR

This is of real concern as will end up with spare and vacant housing so won't be much need for new developments.A Land banking exercise by Cambridge Credit(went broke)50 years ago has just seen the last of vacant land used and developed now. Let that be a warning to us.

Warning Part 2

Posted on 16-07-2015 19:44 | By CONDOR

Poobahs are getting all too cocky and gung ho looking at new developments whereas 6months ago we were depressed. Remember one swallow doesn't make a Spring.Tread very carefully and don't go in off the deep end.

Rash idea?

Posted on 17-07-2015 00:03 | By YOGI BEAR

maybe using modern tech like a phone, if you get one of the latest flash ones you can even see each other on the screen of it, called Vid-chat. I am sure you can all take turns looking at each other in the screen, could even draw ots of who goes first.

They have it seems, but they have already got it, taken it away ... and spent it all and some.

learn about building cities?

Posted on 26-07-2015 13:58 | By YOGI BEAR

I think there is reason to be confused about all of this, Smartgrowth has been lurking around the mentally underpowered bureaucrats the halls of Councils. In reality over a decade has gone by and the track record to date is a massive financial failure for all ratepayers in the district. What we don't get is any idea that anything has changed or got better at anytime since. How the lads are off on holiday in Australia? Like did anyone else miss something here? These Muppets have been saying that Tauranga is a city, so why go to learn (from Aussies) how to build one? On their own words it already is?

bad timing?

Posted on 26-07-2015 15:46 | By YOGI BEAR

Australia is on the downward slope so right now the plans will all be about shutting down development and hunker down to survive the downturn. Is that what they are really looking for to see and learn about. How to survive that? To preserve ones own job and life?

Cost of travel

Posted on 03-08-2015 21:37 | By MISS ADVENTURE

Very hard to see how this is in anyway beneficial to ratepayers of our region. The costs will run into many thousands per holiday maker and likely also spouses and so on. I do not have any problem with a trip of merit, to date the merits have been entirely lacking except on how to be more creative in ways of getting money from ratepayers. There is nothing about reducing debt or rationalizing what Councils do?

Summer retreat?

Posted on 05-08-2015 15:18 | By Plonker

I would be a lot warmer in Queensland than here right now, be lovely to go on an all expense paid vacation to the Sunshine coast.

Len Brown

Posted on 05-08-2015 17:30 | By Plonker

Reports say that Auckland has a number of very highly paid staff based all around the world and still on the Councils payroll at great cost to ratepayers. Perhaps this is the real aim here, to setup an office away from all those difficult questions so creating a nice, warm, pleasant place to be. Paid more to I would expect.

Smartgrowth

Posted on 12-08-2015 12:58 | By MISS ADVENTURE

The only thing that could be "smart" here is the name, the rest of it is the opposite of that and getting worse. The track record here is shocking and in the real world this lot would have been made redundant in 2004 already.
