$8K reparation for iron bar victim

The man who had an iron bar lodged in his head following an assault in Katikati will receive $8,800 from his attacker.

Shayne Zonneveld was sentenced in Tauranga District Court yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to injuring with disregard.

The iron bar lodged in a man's head after an attack in Katikati on January 17.

A more serious charge of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was withdrawn when it was learned that Zonneveld threw the iron bar which then bounced off the door pillar before lodging in the head of the 23-year-old man.

Zonneveld, 19, has been sentenced to 10 months home detention and 200 hours' community work.

He has also been ordered to pay $8,800 reparation to the victim of the attack that took place in Clive Road Katikati on January 17.

The incident made national headlines when security footage of the victim walking into Katikati service station with the iron bar sticking out of his head was shown on SunLive and national television the following day.

Eric Cookson, 22, is charged with assault and Hannah Telfer-Cookson, 18, is charged with inciting assault in relation to the attack. They are to appear for a judge alone trial on August 24 or 31, depending on availability.

A month in a tough jail would have been better punishment. He will pay reparation at $5.00 per week, see his mates on home detention etc. A short, sharp, shock will remind this young man of his responsibilities in life!

I agree, this kid will not learn, PD and hanging around at home will no teach him anything. Teach him some harsh lessons, only way he'll learn.

I wonder

what the medical costs were. Perhaps the offender should be required to pay something towards that as well. However, it probably was a spur of the moment thing & I'm sure he never expected the outcome. A moment of extreme foolishness that came so close to claiming a life

$8K reparation - Yeah Right

At $5 a week from a GOVERNMENT benefit, equals 1,600 weeks, or to put it simply, 30.7 YEARS.......... !!!

Get your facts right

How do you know if "this kid" is not working? What makes you think the reparations will be paid by a benefit at $5 a week? Were you at the court yesterday? How do you know that he will re-offend? You dont even know him or anything about him.

haters should think first

all you people hating on this kid have no real idea of exactly what happened or how the whole thing played out just what you have read in the media. jail wont do anything other than destroy the life of a good kid who made a dumb decision and is very aware of what he did and also knows how close it came to a more serious charge had the outcome gone the other way. i am not trying to justify his actions but hell do all you people forget when you were young and the dumb things ya did? ooh that's right you are all perfect aren't yous.

back to ya cave caveman

again some dumb comment from someone with know idea. this kid is not on any benefit or the dole as you assume but holds a full time job and is just about to come out of his apprenticeship and i am sure some of this was considered when sentenced. best keep ones assumptions to one self.

Thanks Anarchy

Thank you Anarchy 289, well said. It costs around $100,000 a year to keep a person in prison. By keeping Shayne out of prison he is able to work and pay the balance of the reparations, he has already paid half of. He will "do his time' on home detention and then get on with the rest of his life. He has never been in trouble before and deserves a second chance in life.

If he is such a

once again ... Unless you know Shayne personally, or were at the courthouse to hear the judges comments... Then I feel sorry that you are so naive and narrow minded to believe what is written in the media... There are two sides to a story... He is a well rounded young chap and an asset to society... He does not carry a rod around with him where ever he goes... I spose you read that somewhere... Move on I say and everyone get on with on their lives...
