Zoe's 'the one to watch'

Hip-hop styled baggy ‘swag' pants, gothic-inspired wrist cuffs, studded gloves, yellow aviator sunglasses, beanies and piercings for the lip and nose. That's Zoe Beck's style.

And her ‘style' is becoming more and more known in the fashion scene. In fact, the 15-year-old has been dubbed ‘the one to watch'.

The talented Tauranga teen's hip-hop, streetwear inspired fashion collection hit the runway at New Zealand Eco Fashion Week in Wellington earlier this month.

As the youngest designer to have been accepted to show a collection on the catwalk, Zoe mingled with more than 25 established NZ and international designers.

'They were impressed by her collection and amazed to hear that Zoe is still at school,” says Zoe's mother Donna.

'One designer commented that when she was 15, they had trouble just getting their school work done, let alone producing a full designer collection and showing at an international event.”

Talking to a fashion retailer during the show, Donna says she would be following Zoe's story and thinks she might just be the one to watch within the next few years to see how she influences the NZ fashion scene.

'She said Zoe was a very special and talented teen with big dreams, determination and confidence, and this is what sets her apart from other designers. She said: ‘It's obvious that Zoe isn't afraid to take risks and try out new fashion ideas'.”

Zoe says mixing with inspiring designers at the fashion week was a good learning curve.

'It has made me what to do more and to grow my collection with some new pieces as soon as I get home.

"The other designer's collections were amazing, and I got some good ideas about how to continue designing with an environmentally friendly approach.”

One of those ‘good ideas' she's taken from her journey is adding chunky jewellery and bags to her collection.

'I have already made some notes and sketches about what I'm going to do. Although, as soon as I get home, I'll be starting on my next project – which is the total opposite to this one.”

But that's top secret at the moment.

All Zoe will say is while in Wellington for the event, she visited The Gallipoli exhibition at Te Papa museum for fashion research.

'I am also visiting the Waiouru Army Museum on the way home – also part of my inspiration and research for my next design. But my lips are sealed, I'm not saying any more than that.”

Zoe has also been invited to show her collection at three different events within Bay of Plenty and Waikato during the next few months.
