Dog dumped off bridge

The actions of the owners of a dog thrown off the Wairoa Bridge are being described as "appalling".

Tauranga SPCA animal welfare officer Anna Porteous says the owners of an adult dog hit an all-time city low after ditching their animal off the bridge overnight.

At about 11pm witnesses saw what is believed to be a Toyota Estima van stop briefly on the bridge before hearing a splash.

The van was travelling along State Highway 2 from Katikati before turning around at the bridge.

Anna says the dog managed to swim to shore before witnesses lassoed a rope around its neck.

They also attached a torch to the dog so if it moved they could follow it in the dark.

A SPCA emergency team was later called to retrieve the adult female Shar-Pei Labrador cross, chocolate in colour.

Anna says the dog is at the Tauranga SPCA in 'okay condition” apart from being a little timid and scared.

She says it's common for people to dump puppies to be found later, but it's rare for fully grown dogs to be thrown off a bridge.

'It is appalling behaviour to throw a dog off a bridge and carry on with no concern. This is a new low,” says Anna.

Tauranga SPCA are appealing for anyone who may know the dog or were in the vicinity of the Wairoa Bridge at the time of the incident.

'They were coming from Katikati; they went over the over the bridge; they stopped and turned around and went back to Wairoa Road; stopped turned around again and went to the middle of the bridge and threw the dog off.

'Even if people don't come forward and tell us about the incident someone will know who this was and hopefully name and shame them a bit.

Anyone with any information are to call the Tauranga SPCA on 07 578 0245.

The SPCA will offer a reward for information leading to prosecution.

I hope they catch the animals that did this and throw them off the bridge with brick weights on their feet. Poor dog must be scared out of its skin. Would love it but have 3 now. Hope it gets a kind home.

Unbelievable

If the animal is a dog surely this makes the owner a 'scumdog'

Why?

Do people do senseless acts of cruelty like this? In what possible Universe is it OK? If you don't want an animal, don't get one in the first place, or if you can't keep an animal find a better way to pass it on. It is interesting to me that most of the posters here suggest throwing the perpetrators off the bridge. It shows that normal people are capable of imagining how they would feel if it was done to them. But the cruel ones don't seem to have that degree of sensitivity or imagination. I s'pose we should be glad that this beautiful dog has escaped the clutches of the mindless idiots who would do this. Cruelty to animals diminishes Humanity.

How do any of you know it is the owner that did this? It may well have been a stolen dog, a vehicle stolen with a dog inside, or some ignorant person trying to get rid of a neighbours dog which annoyed them...or a bunch of other scenarios. I am a dog lover ,I know people can be cruel, but surely NOBODY could own/feed/love a dog to this age and then just dump it.

Scum of the earth

Lets hope they catch the moronic excuse for a human being who did this and get justice for this poor dog.

But if this was the owners cherished dog it would have been report to authorities as missing and would be back with its owner by now. Hope they catch these horrible individuals and its a shame animal abuse punishment isn't a lot harsher.

How sad

Beyond belief how somebody can treat man's best friend in this manor. With all the other options of giving up a pet why do it this way? This perpetrator needs to be caught and given help.
