Mixed success for BOP

While the big wet that enveloped the upper North Island late last week saw play on the last two days of the ND Junior Secondary cricket tournament in Manurewa abandoned – there were a number of highlights produced by the two Bay of Plenty sides beforehand.

The Bay of Plenty Coastland players are unlikely to take part in a more dramatic match, than Tuesday's match-up with Counties Manukau.

In a match reduced to 35 overs per side because of rain, Counties won the toss and put the Bay side into the field. Counties put together a well paced innings, which they accelerated in in the last overs to post a total of 155/6.

James Boyd picked up three wickets for the second successive day, finishing with 3/27. Coastland skipper Myles Timoti was also in good form with the ball taking two wickets.

The Bay side was ahead of the required run rate until the drinks break when the opposition bowlers started to tighten the noose.

Needing 21 runs from the last two overs, Ben Musgrave and Jonty Rhodes grabbed 10 runs from the penultimate over.

Jonty was run out with two balls remaining, with three runs required for victory. A two off the last ball resulted in the scores being tied, however, Counties Manukau received the win points as they had lost two less wickets.

On day three, BOP Coastland upset the applecart when they provided Waikato Valley South with their first defeat of the tournament.

Led by a 107 run partnership from Myles Timoti (75no) and Connor Fifita (59), the Coastland representatives were in rampant form reaching 234 for the loss of just four wickets. Ben Musgrave chipped in with a handy 37 runs.

The Coastland bowlers roared into action with Thomas Wakelin and Jonty Rhodes having the opposition in some trouble at 22/3. Waikato Valley then rallied with a 64 run partnership before the spin attack of Paddy Carsons and James Boyd paid dividends. Paddy finished with the excellent returns of 4/18.

Waikato Valley was dismissed for just 101 when Thomas Wakelin threw down the stumps for the second time in the match.

Such was the strength of Pool A where Coastland finished with just one loss was that they were relegated (on countback) to the playoff for seventh and eighth.

BOP Lakeland posted their first win of the tournament on day three when they defended 161 against Poverty Bay. Taking first use of the wicket Shayde Perham (48) and Nathan Stanley (28) made major contributions in the Bay sides turn at bat.

The momentum changed several times in Poverty Bay's innings, however, consistent line and length resulted in Lakeland bowling Poverty Bay out four runs short of victory. Shannon McSkimming returned the best Lakeland bowling figures taking three wickets for 32.

The rained out two-day playoff games resulted in BOP Lakeland finished equal fifth with BOP Coastland finishing seventh equal.
