Young designer takes centre stage

Despite thinking she wouldn't be taken seriously, a 15-year-old emerging designer from Tauranga is set to take the runway at New Zealand Eco Fashion Week in Wellington next month.

Tauranga Girls' College student Zoe Beck has been selected to show a five-piece fashion collection alongside more than 25 established NZ and international designers at Eco Fashion Week from June 9-13.

'I couldn't believe it when I heard the news,” says Zoe. 'I couldn't sleep that night as I was wide awake coming up with ideas for new looks.

'I really didn't think I would be taken seriously at 15 as an emerging designer, but the show organisers said were really impressed with the type of designs I am doing at the moment.”

Since its inception in 2013, NZ Eco Fashion Week's international interest has sparked an expansion to a full four-day schedule— including a high fashion runway show, styling events, an exclusive movie screening and pop-up shops.

Zoe is the youngest designer to have been accepted to show a collection and is excited to be part of the eco fashion movement in NZ.

Event director Denise Anglesey says Zoe is incredibly inspiring for someone so young, and she's looking forward to seeing her designs on the runway.

Zoe already has several national design awards under her belt, and her flair for up-cycling op-shop garments into street fashions with a young feel have sparked a lot of interest.

Her designs have already appeared on TV3 News, NZ Cleo Magazine and Indulge Magazine. They've also featured in online fashion magazines and blogs, as well as local and national newspapers.

The young designer is inspired by everything around her and feels her brand is still very much evolving and developing.

Zoe enjoys mixing fabrics and textures which represent the different cultures within NZ to create her own unique style with a young feel.
