Monster maker in town

A man with a sting of monsters to his credit, and nicer creatures is guest speaker at the opening of the Ponder Brothers exhibition at 50 Devonport Road May 27.

Weta Digital creative director Gino Acevedo's gift for the macabre began being noticed when he started out designing and creating Halloween masks in his home town of Phoenix Arizona.

Gino Avecedo will be speaking at the Waipuna Hospice fundraiser.

His since worked on creatures for films like The Waterhorse, Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit, Godzilla, King Kong, Avatar, Men in Black, Independence Day and the recent Planet of the Apes remakes.

'Gino has a very hectic schedule so we are thrilled to have lured him to Tauranga as our guest speaker at the opening next week, a real coup for us,” says Waipuna Hospice fundraising manager Trish Rae.

Gino is speaking at the opening of the exhibition on Wednesday, May 27, at 50 Devonport Road. It's a Waipuna Hospice fundraiser and tickets are $55, which includes wine and canapes.

The Ponder brothers exhibition runs from 28 May – 13 June. Brothers Richard, owner of Rona Gallery in Wellington, and Mike from Marlborough are transforming 50 Devonport Road into a 'pop up” art gallery to exhibit their fine art originals, prints, books and cards.
