Kiwifruit smeared on Te Puke road

A 'flood of green kiwifruit” has been left smeared on the main street of Te Puke after falling from a truck this morning.

The unknown amount of kiwifruit was quickly driven into pulp by motorists at the intersection of Jellicoe Street and Jocelyn Street following the incident shortly before 10am.

Te Puke Economic Development Group managing director Mark Boyle understands the fruit has fallen from a truck laden with one of the Bay of Plenty's largest exports, travelling east from Tauranga.

'I don't know exactly what happened but the truck was coming along the highway, has gone through the roundabout [the intersection of Jellicoe St and Jocelyn St] and fruit has come out of what was probably open boxes.

'I think what's happened is the driver hasn't been aware the fruit has come out.”

Mark, shortly after the incident, shared a photo of the green pulp on Twitter with the following statement: 'Oops! A flood of kiwifruit on the Te Puke Highway!! Who dropped this load of the worlds healthiest fruit?”

The fruit pulp has made the road 'very slippery” causing motorists to slow right down while travelling through the township, Mark adds.

Police and clean-up crews were in attendance this morning to try and clear the road.

Police could not be reached for comment.
