Takitimu lights on hold

Plans to install traffic lights at one of Tauranga's busiest intersections have been given a temporary red light as authorities explore other options.

The New Zealand Transport Agency announced today that the $2.8million traffic re-jig proposal for the Elizabeth Street–Takitimu Drive–State Highway 2 intersection roundabout would be revisited in terms of the options for a short-term solution.

NZTA's Bay of Plenty highways manager, Niclas Johansson, says they have been investigating ways to improve the overall efficiency of the corridor during peak times.

The initial option for this intersection was to replace the current roundabout with traffic lights.

But during an audit, carried out as part of the design process, it became apparent that while installing traffic lights would improve traffic flows during peak hours, it may compromise the performance of the intersection at other times.

There were also concerns around some safety aspects of replacing the roundabout with lights, says Niclas.

'The safety of everyone who uses the road is always front of mind in all of the work that we do,” says Niclas, 'and based on the results of the audit we have decided to revisit the options for a short-term solution.

'We will keep the public fully informed and will seek feedback on any proposed changes to the intersection layout.”

The information comes after NZTA previously told SunLive it was envisaged the construction would improve peak hour traffic congestion. It was originally set down to begin this month, taking two-to-three months in total.

At the time, NZTA said that the current intersection gets quite congested during peak times, with motorists experiencing long delays on the southbound leg in the mornings and on Elizabeth Street in the evenings.

PLEASE - why does everything involving the NZTA take soooooo long?? Its a frightening experience trying to cross the roundabout from Elizabeth St and drive north. JUST GET ON WITH IT!!!!

Barking Mad.

Barkes Corner has much longer queue's and delays as does Cambridge Road. The highway from Omokoroa is even worse. Girven Rd is up there as well. All should have been attended before the Welcome Bay Election Bribe.

Being a motorway as such lights will cause deaths, bad design to start with

second design $$$..3rd

So how much has been spent on this then? two full designs both ready for construction and just before its started the safety audit stops it...how much $$ up to a Million i would say, now a 3rd option! etc>>

People coming out of Glasgow St are a major issue as they want to cross two lanes of traffic to head towards the harbour bridge. Why not go around and join from Cameron Rd and save alot of frustrations. Is it really such a big deal to use a little coomon sense and do your part for traffic flows . There is more than one route that can be just as effective .

Bad Design

Agree with Capt_Kaveman..I don't know why in the first place why the southern lanes weren't straight through like the northern lanes and have a slip lane for entry south from Elizabeth St, off ramp to Elizabeth St (from North) and overhead entry/exit ramps for southern access to Elizabeth St, and access to the Mt from Elizabeth St. Sure it would have cost more but at least plan it right and future proof it for the next 25 plus years. Goes without saying that 15th Ave access south should have been planned onto the toll road as well as access from toll road by the bridge to Bethlehem/north plus southern access (to the Lakes area) from expressway at Bethlehem/Cambridge Rd end. Not future proof planning/design at all!

Lights?

Put lights in the existing design leaving the flow of traffic to the mount, there is only a real problem at peak traffic times

Good decision

Putting in traffic lights was a stupid idea. Roundabouts are well known to be more efficient than traffic lights, so it would have been a retrograde step.
