Pedal protest proves strong

Organisers of a popular cycle rally against Tauranga City Council's decision not to fund part of a cycleway are confident they have put forward a strong enough case for council to re-think its stance.

Yesterday more than 800 cyclists rode from Fergusson Park to The Strand to protest council's decision not to contribute its $500,000 share towards a cycleway linking Omokoroa to Otumoetai.

The development of the Tauranga Moana cycle trail is a joint venture between the Western Bay District Council and Tauranga City Council.

Lead agency on the project, WBOPDC has committed to paying $300,000 a year in its draft 10-year plan. However, TCC recently declined to fund their portion from Matua to the Wairoa River.

According to the Trust, unless TCC contributes, the Omokoroa-Tauranga link won't happen as other valuable funding avenues are lost.

Bay of Plenty Community Trails Trust member and event organiser Kevin Kerr says the rally's immense support should bode well heading into this week's Long Term Plan deliberations, which start tomorrow.

Of the 646 submissions, council received about 80 are on the subject of the Coastal Cycle Trail.

The majority of submissions seem to be in favour of council funding the Tauranga section of the project.

'I'd be pretty confident the rally is going to give council some hard thinking to carry on with,” says Kevin.

'You have to be confident that it would. Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout spoke about it needing to happen and there were the two politicians [Tauranga MP Simon Bridges and Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller] saying that TCC need to change their view.”

The group coordinated the rally to coincide with the LTP deliberations in an effort to add extra weight to their argument.

Although Kevin admits he he was pleasantly surprised to get such a strong response from the community.

'I thought with these things you might get 200-300 people, but to get that number was hugely overwhelming,” he explains.

The proposed cycleway would link into the city's existing cycling network to form a continuous trail, stretching from Omokoroa to Matua and eventually extending out towards Paengaroa and the Tauranga Eastern Link.

Some 19 cycleways have been established around New Zealand from local and government funding.

Councillors voted six-to-four against providing $500,000 for the project on the grounds that the government should be paying for the national trail, with council money being spent on cycle trails within the city.

Kevin says Vanessa Quinn, former downhill mountain biking champion, perfectly summed up the need for the cycleway by highlighting the opportunity to link the coastal communities

'We have got lovely beaches,” she says, 'but in actual fact we don't have much else here. We have got a climate that is conducive right through the year for riding.

'Our coastal network, from Opotiki right up to Waihi, is amongst the best coastline in the country and we should be availing ourselves of that opportunity with these cycleways. The Tauranga to Omokoroa one is a good first start.”

SunLive is currently seeking comment from Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby on the cycle rally and the LTP.

I totally support TCC and its Councillors in NOT funding this particular cycleway when there are far more pressing safety issues within the TCC boundaries. An example is Papamoa Beach Road,it has NO safe cycleways between Domain and Parton Roads. In even moderate rain, the road floods reducing even the road to only one lane in places. TeAkaroa drive needs extending through for safety reasons. Papamoa's flooding, roading and cycle issues are much more important to fix first. Papamoa Councillors including the Mayor who has lived in and represented Papamoa for years take note. Papamoa residents are watching you so please take note and fix cycleways and TeAkaroa Drive extention issue's first before spending money on this cycleway. I also feel WBOPDC should take note and withdraw their share of funding also and maybe widen Parton Road from Tara Road to Bell Road for safe cycling.

in the earlier article stand. If YOU want it, FUND IT YOURSELVES. It would be great to get the loony cyclists off the roads. We should register all cyclists and raise a levy against them for their costs. Cycle lanes, Cycle tracks, velodromes, Closing off public roads so that they can parade up and down in their Lycra and an ACC levy for the medical costs involved in cycling (Whether caused by motorists or their own irresponsibility). This is probably one of the few organised past-times that has no ACC levy associated with it. Go out and hurt yourself or cause an accident and someone else will foot another bill for you. I treat every Cyclist as an irresponsible and inconsiderate nutcase and I believe strongly that cyclists should treat motorists the same way and take some personal responsibility rather than whine about other peoples actions on the roads.

by the comments by How About This View. How can anyone get that bitter just because a lot of people choose to simply ride a bike because they enjoy it. But most notable for their not having the guts to sign it off. Pathetic. Bruce Ingram

I agree completely with "My Comments" viewpoint and I do cycle socially but some of these arrogant cycling nuts are something to behold. They think the world owes them something (it doesn't) they treat motorists with disdain and even worse they treat pedestrians with contempt.Every bike on the road should be registered and have a certificate of fitness. If these cycling bozos want something special then raise the money and pay for it themselves rather than rorting money out of those citizens they despise. The picture tells the story 800 cyclists crowding out the Ferguson Park/Tauranga Central; walkway on Sunday and what would the pedestrians when this poncing about was happening. Attitude clearly was my way or the highway and stuff you Jack I'm allright.POSHS

When you say Council you mean ratepayers as in when people say Government they mean taxpayer. Let's actually think about what we are asking to be funded by other peoples' money. This would be a luxury as are a lot of our walkways which are beautiful but not core business. Personally I would rather not fund leisure cycleways and walkways as great as they are. After the initial cost, ongoing maintenance will be required at the cost of ratepayers. I support TCC on this on.

Strange Community

What a strange community we have. I presume that the cyclist hating correspondents are against ratepayer funded swimming pools children's playgrounds.sportsfields indoor stadiums, museums libraries, and the many other community funded recreational facilities modern family focused communities need.I presume that hearing of 800 hundred positive people protesting for a council contribution to a WesternBay Cycleway has struck a raw nerve amongst the couch potatoes. I challenge them to organise a protest against the cycle way and see if they can find 800 supporters to get out of their beds at 9am on a Sunday morning and demonstrate.Well done Bay Community Trails Trust and the council for the trails so far created

You hit the nail square on the head. I am totally against funding other peoples recreation. Maybe we should also have council funded fishing charters or pig hunting for those of us that like a walk in the bush AWAY from traffic. Maybe we should encourage all of our youth to expect EVERYTHING to be provided for them, just stick out your hand? OH! Hang on we already have that don't we? Political parties that solve everything with public money. As for organising a RALLY????? What a waste of time, but then I have never been a member of a rent-a-mob, being too busy working to fund my own recreation and pay for everyone else as well. For those that spend more than ten minutes driving to work and back, ie. Truckies, couriers, taxi, Bus drivers etc. etc. The professional road users, We should keep bikes off our roads.

make some good points there, John. As for cyclists paying their way, what ACC levies are due for the local rugby club, etc? BTW, hope to see you out on the road one day HATV, I'll show you some personal responsibility.

Wonderfully constructive comments! Just proves my opinion that there is little floating around between the ears of SOME cyclists. If you can't dispute the opinions of another, use thinly veiled threats.

How about this view you are absolutely right in your last comment. We should keep bikes off our roads and onto cycle trails where cyclists won,t need to wear those so offensive to you bright coloured lycra outfits to be seen by inattentive motorists.By the way where do you think that the money comes from to build and maintain the boat ramps and jetty's around the harbour so you can launch your boat to enjoy your favoured recreational activity. The cost of building and maintaining the Sulpher Point ramps and jetties alone would give us many kilometres of cycle trails Then of course there are the tracks bridges and huts in the bush maintained by DOC from our tax dollars.

I didn't think it was veiled at all, let alone thinly. As for what's between my ears, I've letters after my name. Do you? And some more great points from John.
