Hammer victim there on business

Police say the man who was attacked by another with a hammer was at the scene of the crime to serve a legal notice.

Detective Sergeant Peter Blackwell says the 65-year-old who was hospitalised with bruised ribs and shoulders, was a ‘document server' who had driven to the Lower Kaimais address on Monday evening.

A ‘document server', or ‘process server', is responsible for serving legal or court documents.

A 60-year-old, who was at home when the assault occurred, is charged with injuring with intent and intentional damage.

He is due to appear in the Tauranga District Court on Monday.

Police say the hammer was used to assault the ‘document server' and extensively damage his car.

Peter says the victim was taken to hospital by ambulance to be treated for his injuries.
