Stranded whale killed

A juvenile cuvier's beaked whale stranded in Maketu was killed after it was unable to head back out to sea yesterday.

The four-meter-long mammal – who was named Uru by locals – was found on the rocks outside the Maketu surf club at around 8am.

It's believed the whale was washed ashore during the early morning storm on Thursday.

Department of Conservation Tauranga ranger Brad Angus says it was most likely tired or injured and that's why it became stranded in the first place.

Efforts to re-float the whale proved unsuccessful and the decision was made yesterday to shoot it.

'The whale was buried at Newdicks Beach yesterday,” adds Brad.

is the correct term barbarians they should feel ashamed of themselves and they think they are doing it a favour, why not feed it and try for a few more days ???
