'Habitual criminal' jailed

A Tauranga man who crashed into a police car during a chase through Welcome Bay in June has been sent to prison for one year and 11 months and disqualified from driving until October 2019.

Appearing via audio-visual link in Tauranga District Court yesterday, William Jonathan Wiki, 31, was sentenced to the prison term after earlier admitting a raft of charges.

William Wiki was sent to prison yesterday.

They included failing to stop when followed by red and blue lights, driving in a dangerous manner, possessing methamphetamine and assault on a person with a blunt instrument.

Wiki was originally planning on defending the charges, but changed his plea at his last court appearance.

He was arrested following a police chase in Welcome Bay on June 1, when a stolen white Subaru was seen being driven suspiciously in the area.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle and spiked the car twice.

During the pursuit, Wiki crashed into a police car twice, causing moderate damage to the vehicle.

In court yesterday, Judge Thomas Ingram described Wiki as a habitual criminal with 11 pages of past criminal offending.

'You have been sentenced to prison terms since 2000 for continuously driving while disqualified, burglaries and other criminal offending,” Judge Ingram told Wiki.

'However, you do have a rather surprising probation report which is sympathetic to your situation.”

Judge Ingram said many of Wiki's problems had arisen from family associations and that he had made every effort to resolve his current offending and try and move on with his life.

Taking into consideration Wiki's guilty plea and remorse for his offending, Judge Ingram sentenced him to one year and 11months in jail, disqualified him from driving and ordered him to pay $7202 in reparation.

Bet his first priority is to pay the reparation off as soon as he is out of prison!! Why do judges pass these unrealistic fines on these losers? Pink jump suit and a sledge hammer for 4 years should have been handed.

Reparation - rubbish
