Brisk Birdman proves a blast

Young pupils got a chilly lesson in aviation this morning when the donned Birdman creations and took to flight off Sailsbury Wharf.

As an exciting end of term event, the Year 5 and 6 students from Mount Maunganui Primary school created their own flying contraptions and tested them out by jumping off the wharf into Pilot Bay.
Mount Primary School pupils had a blast taking part in a Birdman exercise.

The students all loved it and got very involved, dressing up and doing their make-up, says Mount Maunganui Primary School teacher David Plane.

Not only was the trip fun for the end of term, but doubled as a lesson in aerodynamics for the pupils, as they got the chance to apply their knowledge when making the inventions.

'We did a trip to Classic Flyers and we learnt all about lift and how that works”, says David.

The chilly weather did not seem to deter the students from having a good time as they made the leap into the chilly water and looked forward to warming up in the Mount Hot Pools afterwards.
