A magnitude 8.2 earthquake that struck Chile this afternoon is not currently registering any tsunami threat to New Zealand.
'MCDEM has assessed the information with the assistance of scientific advisors and based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand,” says a statement from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
An 8.2 earthquake has struck off the coast of Chile today.
The US Geological Survey initially reports the quake struck 99 kilometres northwest of the Chilean city of Iquique at 8.46pm (12.46pm NZT).

There was no serious damage to infrastructure or reports of victims following the massive earthquake, a government representative is reported to have said.
