Man's body found on Pilot Bay

Tauranga police believe the death of an 81-year-old man whose body was found in Pilot Bay today is not suspicious.

The body was seen in shallow water near Grace Avenue about 10.40am.

The man's body is removed from Pilot Bay.

Police are investigating a person's body found on Pilot Bay.

A member of the public walking along the beach discovered the body.

A police officer pulled the man's body ashore and the area was cordoned off.

The man is believed to be local.

His vehicle was located by police at Salisbury Wharf and police would like to hear from anyone who has recently been in the Salisbury Wharf area or along that stretch of coastline, who may have information relevant to this death.

A post mortem will be conducted to determine cause of death.

Details of the man will not be released until next of kin have been located and advised.

A section of The Mall near Pacific Avenue was cordoned off while police attended. It was reopened about midday.

SunLive understands Higgins Contractors working on the Pilot Bay boardwalk were among the first to discover the body.

Five police units, detectives and a police photographer were called to the beach where the body of the man was removed just before midday.

Mount Maunganui student Mike McMillan was coming out of the public toilets on The Mall when he spotted the body on the beach.

He says it appeared as though the man had been in the water for 'quite some time” as he appeared white and pale.

'It appears to have just washed up. It's something I haven't seen before.”

Police will not identify the man until the next of kin have been notified.

Conditions at Pilot Bay are described as 'extremely windy” with rough seas in the harbour.

High tide at Pilot Bay is at noon today.
