Teachers protest education policy

Bay of Plenty teachers stepped up their protests against the Government's education policies taking to Tay Street beach in a visually united front this afternoon.

About 600 Bay of Plenty teachers took to the beach holding anti-Global Education Reform Movement placards while forming the phrase ‘stand up for kids protect our schools' and writing messages in the sand to protest their anger.

Hundreds of teachers protest on Mount Maunganui beach.

The teachers were to have marched up Mauao but have respected the iwi decision that it would not be appropriate.

The beach protest followed a paid union meeting at ASB Baypark, where 800 Bay of Plenty teachers discussed the progress on negotiations for their collective teachers' agreement and the Government's education policies.

The Government's agenda includes the introduction of charter schools, competition rather than collaboration in teaching and learning and national standards and league tables.

Teachers say they are concerned about the direction of the Government's education policies, which they say will destroy New Zealand's highly valued quality public education system.

New Zealand Educational Institute Bay of Plenty field officer Rachel Chater says the meeting was sombre with most people 'really frustrated” the Government is not respecting teachers at all.

'People get it and they are angry and the fact that so many turned out was great.”

She says to see 800 teachers, out of the 880 in the region, signals they are prepared to take further action.

'It was such a huge turnout here.

'I was absolutely stoked. We are standing together saying that we aren't happy.”

Te Puke Intermediate School teacher Stephen Knightley joined the protest to make a stand and ensure children's education came first.

'I was there to make a stand against the government and make sure that the matter is heard for our children and our students.

'We trying to show us united as one. We are not just teachers we are parents and others. We are trying to stand strong.

New Zealand Educational Institute Te Puke branch secretary Trish Hunt says one of the major issues teachers are angry with is the proposal for performance based teaching where instead of working together for the development of all students, teachers will be forced to square off for better pay.

'The children's learning will be narrowed down and only a few children pass in that narrow approach.

'At the end of the day we are here for the children. We are not number one in education in the world, but we are number five and working on it.”

is the world all about them!!!, where are all the pupils, or I am picking this is a teacher only day, lets send debt collectors to recover the days pay, they may or may not receive, so much drama is being made out of this Nova Pay debacle, you think as teachers they would be able to have an up to date registered teacher data base which they supplied to their paymasters, apparently not,go figure!!!, and if you want the support of more Kiwis, a bit of advice, cut out all your left wing crap, teach our children properly, and basically do your bloody job, or go and do something else, stop whinging.

No Sambo!! Not a Teacher Only Day and as anyone who is, 'Working at the Standard' would know you don't comment on things you know nothing about or you research them first. Since you've down neither, sorry mate. Your 'Well below' the standard or not smarter than a 7 year old. Sorry about that.

So much anger??

I'm astounded at the comments made here about teachers and education in NZ as well as the very uninformed comments about novapay, (up to date data base? pay master? What century are you talking about? No the world is not all about teachers, if you go into a school you will see it is very much about the children. The whinging today was less about novapay, more about the plans the govt has for education, detrimental ideas that have been proven in other countries to have made children's achievement worse. As for left wing crap, I'm not sure what you mean.

What it's about

The protest today was about the way the government is introducing policies and practices that have failed dismally in other countries eg.National Standards, Performance Pay and Charter Schools. Not only that we have a dishonest Ministry who skew data and report only statistics which suit them. They are definitely well below the standard and would not qualify for performance pay. Novapay is a separate issue. It has nothing to do with schools providing information to the Ministry, but again everything to do with a Ministry ill-informed, ill-prepared and irresponsible about the effects of their actions. Teachers have been remarkably patient. We are not left wing. We care deeply about the children we teach and the quality of our work. We simply could not do this job if we didn't. We are just tired of educational decisions being made at the whim of arrogant politicians who think they know all about schools because they went to one once.

firstly I am not your mate, and secondly if as you so kindly put it "I am not smarter than a 7 year old", I possibly had a so called teacher like you as an educator!!!, and thirdly, you possibly need to do some research, on why you wanted to become a teacher, and to all those good teachers trying to do a difficult job, (a lot of us have them), if you see someone on your staff wearing sandals and long socks, apply for another position.

Its not only teachers that are affected by this novapay crap. It also includes teacher-aides, cleaners, caretakers, etc, etc. How would you be if you received no pay for three months or are you that well off that you don't need to worry about that - mate.Oh by the way that left wing crap got us 40 hour work weeks, annual and sick leave. And supposedly the right to be paid for a days work.

By the way - the meeting was an as-of-right union meeting which members of any union are entitled to have by law. Read for yourself at: HowTo Union Rights - HowToLaw.co.nz www.howtolaw.co.nz/union-rights-xidp392274.html

All of this fighting is taking attention away from what our teachers are fighting for... our kids!! I think what they are dealing with is horrible, they are trying to tell the Government that, what they are proposing and changing just ISN'T working but our Government won't listen. If anyone should quit it isnt our teachers, it's certain useless members of our Government. i am disgusted with how our teachers are getting treated and support them 100%. Stand up for kids protect our schools!!!!

Your comments are obviously born out of ignorance of the facts. Take a few minutes to read about the full effects of the Novopay debacle; search the internet and read up on the facts as to why teachers and educators are so vehement about policy changes being forced through by the government (the GERM scenario); look below the surface and try and comprehend that teachers are in there actually batting for the children, not for themselves. Teachers know the facts about failed policies overseas and do not want to see our world-class education system destroyed by whims and fancies of some our politicians who appear to know little about their portfolios. Would you be so vocal about nurses, doctors, food service workers and cleaners protesting about negative changes being forced on them in their work places?

Wrong mate, the complaints are about Teachers not wanting to have anybody look or know what they are doing, to keep the nice big fat pay checks rolling in and that they all keep the well feathered jobs going for ever and ever without anyone allowed to ask any quesitons. Sounds a bit like the "Full and Final" Maori claims through the Waitangi Tribunal SAME SAME ....

You are so bigoted about and ignorant of, the facts involved in education and teachers/teaching. This is clearly borne out in the first sentence in your reply to Anon.

Pengiun

You are all at sea mate, in any job in the real world (not at a school) the real deal is no sale no job! Very simple concept that I am sure even a pengium can understand, perhaps look at it like this, to get anywhere as a pengiun you need to jump into the water first then swim. Here all that is being asked of teachers as a collective is that what they achieve is measured and reported for all to see. You don't like it that likely you reside in the bottem 5% and need to move on to TCC, they seem to be a haven for ex-teachers, still overpaid and no on eknows what they do either.

I will give you credit for being able to ramble on so much about some things of which you have little knowledge. Try writing a commentary on something that you actually do know something about - not a lot I suspect. Anyway, thanks for your blurred thoughts. I am ‘flattered' by your perception that somehow I am your mate. But I must decline the implied offer of friendship. As for me, I will happily dive into the sea and swim away and find a real 'mate” who makes sense.
