Six escape car splitting crash

Six people injured in the car splitting crash in Tauriko late yesterday afternoon have all been discharged from Tauranga Hospital today.

The crash between a silver people mover and a white rental car happened near Redwood Lane about 5pm, and closed the highway for about an hour while the wreckage was removed.

A Nissan Sunny was split into two pieces in the crash in Tauriko on Tuesday.

A Tauranga Hospital spokesperson says both drivers - a 50-year-old woman and a 48-year-old woman - and four passengers in the grey van; two 13-year-old girls, a 12-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy were treated by the hospital.

The white Nissan Sunny rental was split in two pieces by the impact, with the front and rear halves ending up on either side of the highway.

Tauranga Fire Service senior station officer Mark Keller says it was one of those 'really lucky” accidents where no one was killed.

'If there had been someone in the back seat they would have been dead.”

Tauranga Police say the Nissan Sunny was travelling towards Tauranga when it crossed the centreline and collided with the people mover that was travelling towards Hamilton.

Meanwhile a 71-year-old man injured in an accident in Bureta near midday yesterday is in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital.

He was knocked off his scooter at the intersection of Ngatai Road and Bureta Road.

Tauranga police say a pair of tourists will be facing charges as a result of the collision.

They are alleged to have pulled out from Bureta Road into the scooter rider's path. The intersection is governed by a give way sign on Bureta Road.

it says the white car which was travelling to tauranga crossed the centre line. That is a two lane passing lane. This is exactly what happend a few years ago when friends of ours was hit. A car coming towards tauranga crossed the centre line and hit them heading towards hamilton. What is wrong with people.
