A 50-year-old woman was taken to Tauranga Hospital with multiple serious injuries.
St John Ambulance spokesperson says three other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The impact of the crash completely split the white Nissan Sunny rental in two pieces, which ended up on either side of the highway.
Two fire trucks, two ambulances and police were called to the crash that blocked both lanes along the highway from Tauranga to Hamilton during peak hour.
Tauranga Fire Service senior station officer Mark Keller says it was one of those 'really lucky” incidents where no one was killed.
'If there had been someone in the back seat they would have been dead.”
Two tow trucks were called to tow the remains of the white car, and the people mover from the scene.

Split in two! Sounds like a 'cut and shut' to me.

There is such good visibility there and the road is fine, were they foreigners? If so, another example of why they should not be allowed to drive here without sitting a test!
