The Opotiki girl was flown by the Tauranga based TrustPower TECT rescue helicopter from Te Kaha to Whakatane Hospital yesterday afternoon.

The quadbike that rolled down a hill hitting a farmer in Matamata this month.

Base manager and pilot Liam Brettkelly says the girl was riding as a passenger on the quad bike when she fell off.

Yesterday's accident is the latest in a string of quad bike accidents.

The TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to a Matamata farm on January 15 after a farmer was run over by his bike as he attempted to open a gate.

Pilot Todd Dunham says the farmer had gotten off his bike to open the gate when it rolled forward.

'The farmer tried to stop the bike but it knocked him into a deep trench and the bike came down on top of him.

'He managed to climb out of the ditch but due to his injuries he fell down another bank and stopped on the edge of a river.”

The farmer - Nathan Cleverley - spent the night by the edge of the river and was located the following morning by another farmer who went looking for him when he discovered he was not at his home.

The man suffered serious abdominal and pelvic injuries and was treated by St John paramedics before being flown to Waikato hospital for further treatment.
